Drive not mounting on boot 'Special device /dev/sda7 does not exist."

On boot, when mounting filesystems (most of the time) my home partition -- /dev/sda7 -- will not mount.  Subsequently doing a

# mount -a

mounts all the drives normally, however.  The partition is ext4, and my other ext4 partition for root mounts fine.

I am completely stumped, and I have no idea as to what logs I might need to generate or post, but your ideas would be appreciated.  I have not treated this hard drive / partition well, so it could be an issue of wear, but I hope that is not the case.

edit:

Don't think it's an fstab issue ( since you can do mount -a). Did you check 'dmesg | tail' for errors

This is the output to dmesg | tail, after mounting with mount -a.  I don't see anything wrong with it.

mount -a doesn't have a problem, as you say, it only occurs during boot ( maybe timing issue?). Not enough info there, try dmesg | less and see if you can find any errors?

Re: Drive not mounting on boot 'Special device /dev/sda7 does not exist."

Alright, I'll go looking, but I've already grepped it for phrases like filesystem, sda, and I can't find anything.  The output is below incase someone is willing to look through it for me.

I don't have syslog-ng enabled, if that means anything.

EXT4-fs (sda5): warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended

The above is the only thing I can find that seems relevant, but I think this just means that I've mounted sda5 a set number of times and it wants me to check for errors.

Re: Drive not mounting on boot 'Special device /dev/sda7 does not exist."

How did you conclude it is not mounting? Did it mount before, or is this a fresh install? Looks like /home is mounting ok:

EXT4-fs (sda7): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode

I've mounted sda5 a set number of times and it wants me to check for errors

Correct, but this is another partition, though it is good advice to check anyway

None of my settings load, no configuration files for gvim and things such as that, and doing an ls at my home directory also doesn't give any files (except for a few pdfs that I downloaded at one point when I hadn't tried doing a mount -a because it was so trivial, and was in a hurry).

That message comes from me doing the mount -a.

I'll do the e2fsck and see what happens.

Re: Drive not mounting on boot 'Special device /dev/sda7 does not exist."

By the way, your fstab should be

/dev/sda5 / ext4 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda7 /home ext4 defaults 0 2

So that it automatically checks.

Re: Drive not mounting on boot 'Special device /dev/sda7 does not exist."

See also the entry on fs_passno in the manpage of fstab.

Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.
