Debug UDev Freeze on Boot

If UDev freezes after "Waiting for UDev uevents...", and possibly crashes, how do you determine the source of the problem? What log files are helpful? Can additional debugging info be emitted?

Also, how do you boot into /bin/bash? I tried modifying the kernel line:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda5 ro init=/bin/bash

but I get the following error:
-bash: cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device
-bash: no job control in this shell
