I use KDE, but I want to make it clear that this was only because I wanted to experiment with "normal" GUI desktop environments to analyze them from an HCI perspective...

Yes, but this one is different. I put similar environments in the same category - so you have plain traditional wms in one category, other for tiling/tabbed/keyboard-controlled wms.
And there is an option for console-only users.
This survey is not redundant.

had xfce4 on my old laptop, then I got a new and more powerfull one, so now Im running kde. I think I will continue with that for some time.. its very nice

well, I guess it depends on the system. My server is console only. Accessible via ssh.
My desktop is another story.

Gnome ofcourse, why else would I maintain it?

Used XFCE 4.2 on gentoo for a while, but after adding things like nautilus ,gnome-volume manager and evolution to it, it because just as "slow" as Gnome, so I reverted to gnome again (also archlinux because I hate recompiling my whole system every day)

Tried KDE a few times, used it in the past, but I don't like the widgets that are so large that you can land an airplane on it
Before Gnome 2.0 I used KDE as primary desktop, because gnome 1.x sucked completely

At the moment I am using the enlightenment development branch, before that i used to use kde, but dr17's just much faster!!

I used KDE for a while (and KDE is great! I can't use user friendly things... ), but I have gone back to Xfce 4.2 now, and with their composite extension , I can both have an fast, eyecandy rich and great DE

Window Maker (I liked older versions of XFCE, but it seems it's outgrown itself, unfortunately). There are many little user-interface design things that make it joyful and productive to use (Apple's UI brilliance in both the Mac and NeXT still shines). With a little tweaking, it can look rather pretty, too.

I think the features that really stand it out to me are it's Dock, it's iconification (very streamlined and simple), it's well-done context menus, it's speed, and it's configurability.

On P4 (Working Frequency 450 Mhz [Orginal 1800 Mhz]) gnome runs fine, I don't know why people use XFce for slow computers, but anyway gnome is great!

It's really a matter of RAM, not CPU speed. Older computers are generally rather lacking in the RAM department... But stuff an old PC with 384 megs of RAM and KDE or GNOME should run fine on it.

I wonder why so many people claim that xfce is lightweight. Maybe it uses less memory than GNOME (because of lacking features and less generic design), but it SO SLOW. Xffm takes over one second to start (even after it's in cache), whereas nautilus opens folders immediately. And the panel blocks when the mail check applet is checking mail.
XFCE certainly has some potential for future improvement, but in my opinion using it makes no sense in the current situation. If you are memory limited use something like fluxbox with a filemanager like rox. Otherwise, GNOME is a better choice.
This is my opinion and advice - you may not agree with it and that's ok. I know there are other choices (KDE, wmi or console). I just can't find any reason why people want to use XFCE.
