XFCE4 hangs with high iowait

Arch boots normally, and I can start xfce, which proceeds with its bootup tasks relatively routinely, but the system grinds to a halt after about 20 seconds. If I open a terminal window and keep top running, the wa percentage shoots up to ~94-99% and just stays there. I am reluctant to call it a hardware issue because I dualbook OS X which works without any problems. The problem also doesn't seem to happen if I boot Arch into a terminal without starting the X server.

Anyone have any advice? I have not encountered something like this before, and it randomly started happening today.

Re: XFCE4 hangs with high iowait

By way of an update, there also seems to be a problem with pacman. It has consistently had a /var/lib/pacman/db.lck file sticking around, and it fails to run unless I remove this file. But then pacman always hangs on the "Checking dependencies" step. Is this related?
