MAKEFLAGS setting for Core 2 duo CULV?

I'm setting some options in /etc/makepkg.conf, and I'm possiblygoing to try pacbuilder:

My question is what option should I set for MAKEFLAGS?  I have read that MAKEFLAGS can be set to number of cores+1, then I've also read some people use -j8 for the Q6600.

Surely there is a definitive rule of thumb?

I went with -f3.  Moving on to pacbuilder....
