After porting a game to Unix it should not be hard to port it to linux too...
I do not like steam but I would buy it definitely anyway.

Most interesting question for me in between is: Will there be a hack to use the mac version of source-games on linux? Because at least for team fortress 2, wine is far from beeing competetive to native windows, as performance is concerned. Its stuttering... has really heavy framedrops, etc. OpenAL and (native) OpenGL should proabaly be much better. This would be great news, until (if ever) valve realy announces native Linux support.

That "hack" would work exactly like how wine works now.

I just cant wait for this..... its the best news i've heard in a long long time... i cannot recall how many times in steam forums we asked for it... how many petitions online... etc, etc.....
Only thing is: They will port the source engine only, not all the steam games (as far as i understand) - so, you will be able to play half life 2 plus all it's derivates/mods/games made with the same engine, BUT, you may not be able to play any other game, lets say... red orchestra? which is made with the UT engine.... am i right?

Phoronix is faaaaar from being official, and a littly sloppy on accuracy too. All we can say that there are internal linux builds.

At least, they are the first that found proves that Valve has plans for Steam in Mac (Official) and possible Linux.

So to tell you Guys, but Valve have denied that they are working on a Linux Steam Client.....

That could mean two things: Either they really have no Linux-related work in progress (which is not likely, since there is proof of lots of Linux specific code in the mac binary), or they just don't want to announce anything until they have something ready to be released.

Or they're not making a Steam Linux client. Why doesn't anybody, anywhere accept that? Always grasping at straws, trying to read into something that isn't there...

I quote myself:
(which is not likely, since there is proof of lots of Linux specific code in the mac binary)
And by "lots", I mean "LOTS", including but not limited to a Linux binary (which some guys at Phoronix managed to run the GUI) and a lot of Linux specific code in the dmg binary.
You are right, maybe they did write lots and lots of code they will never use. Why would that be weird?

Citation needed.
ps: They have plenty of linux binaries. Dedicated servers.

It's obviously not ready:

But it is indeed a binary of the steam client that somehow does run on linux.

Oh guys, come on. This is nothing more than a conspiracy theory.

@ijanos: Citation given at post #44. Considering what's shown on that source, how is it a conspiracy theory?

What is shown? Because I saw a Steam logo in a screenshot. Could anyone even reproduce that? I don't know what all the fuss is about, valve works with linux, they have linux dedicated servers, they probably have a linux steam client to test some stuff. So what? What you guys hoping for is that they will port games to linux and release the whole Steam platform for linux. They said many times that they are not planning that and I see reason not to believe them. Drawing conclusions form some shell scripts and binaries and saying that they are secretly working on a linux client is a conspiracy theory.
Lets hope that they are working on HL2 Episode 3 instead ![]()

Well that's just POV. We are all entitled to have one ![]()
