X crashes

I recently updated my Arch Linux system and now, the X server crashes randomly. I thought it was e17 but upon installing Gnome, the problem remained. It seems to crash most often when I'm using the built in search function in Firefox. Is this happening to anyone else? Advice would be appreciated. I love Arch Linux but if this does not improve, I might have to try a different distribution. Before the system update, I have never run anything so stable.

Re: X crashes

Any errors in the log?  Something in dmesg?  Packages updated in last update?

Re: X crashes

Where can I find the log file? I know both e17 and X were updated. I tried downgrading e17 but that just broke things completely.

Re: X crashes

Well dmesg, just type dmesg.  X log should be in /var/log ; same with the pacman log, which will tell you excatly what was updated.

Re: X crashes

I cannot find any errors in the X log. When I run with xinit, it crashes to terminal and when I launch using gdm, it crashes to that. Here is the text of dmesg:

Re: X crashes

Ok, so wait.  If you run gdm, and log into Gnome ... it crashes right back to gdm?  That wouldn't be X crashing then, it would be Gnome crashing.

Re: X crashes

also, could you please use the code tags?  it makes things much more readable!

if you could post the output of

grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

This should let you know if any errors have occurred.

grep WW /var/log/Xorg.0.log

will show any Warnings that have occurred (not necessarily bad, however this info may be useful)

if you don't find anything, then it might be the DE as lifeafter2am was saying.  it could also be firefox, since you say it happens frequently when using the search function in FF,  you could try using a different browser (I like chromium), and if that doesn't work, maybe try experimenting with a different WM/DE.  I'm not seeing anything in your dmesg that would cause this so I'm not sure.
and I'm not saying you need to switch permanently or anything (unless you want to)  but this should help narrow down what program is causing the problem.

Re: X crashes

I can confirm that the crashes also happen in KDE too. Anything triggering a completion box causes the crash.
Crashes started after I enabled testing repo and upgraded everything.

Since rekonq uses Qt and Firefox uses Gtk only xorg stuff seems to be the common denominator.

Re: X crashes

I am happy to use code tags if someone tells me what they are and how I use them. Sorry. I'm a little new to this type of debugging.

Re: X crashes

@jsschuler
http://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

they are super simple, similar to HTML tags. basically makes a nice small box with a scroll bar for huge blocks of text (like dmesg outputs)

You need to use [] not <>.

No errors here, which means its probably not Xorg.

Re: X crashes

That's awesome, This means that X probably ISN'T the culprit, also since you say that the error occurs in e17 and gnome, It's probably safe to assume that it's not the window manager, therefore I would say that Firefox would be the best place to start trouble-shooting.

You're using the Testing repo, please start a new topic over there.

1) You are not using the testing repo correct?
2) Try a different browser and see if it causes the same thing.

Re: X crashes

Well, for the moment, I've started using Chromium in e17 and things seem to be working so far. To complicate things, the problem seems to have improved last night though not entirely. I also think it has happened a few times with Thunderbird and Pidgin though far less frequently. I appreciate the help and will keep you all updated.

interesting, all of them are GTK apps, what version of GTK2 are you using? you can find this with

pacman -Qi gtk2

Re: X crashes

The output is as follows:
Interestingly, the I was not aware that the package conflicted with cups which I was also having issues with for awhile. There was about a week where it was in constant need of overwriting the cups conf file. I've been upgrading frequently hoping that would fix it. Perhaps that's why the cups problem went away. Thank you.

Re: X crashes

I believe I have the same problem as the OP. I switched from Gnome to XFCE but the problem persists. I've also tried looking at the log files but I haven't seen any errors. It happens with firefox and brasero.

Re: X crashes

I'm having crashes as well. I haven't been able to reproduce them, so I'm unsure of the cause. I'm running Gnome with Awesome as the window manager. Basically all of my applications are killed and I'm kicked back to the login screen for gdm. I've assumed that the problem is related to Awesome, but I don't have any real evidence yet to support that.

If it happens again I'll see if I can find anything in the logs and post back here.
