Hello!
I've been using Ubuntu and derivates for a few years on my current rig, and all this time I've been having problems with sound output related to optical out (SPDIF).
I use SPDIF passthrough for DD5.1/DTS when playing movies in MPlayer or VLC.
The problem I've been having with Ubuntu (32bit) for years (with our without pulseaudio in addition to alsa) is that after playing through a movie with passthrough enabled I often could not listen to normal internally mixed audio through the same optical output without quitting X, unloading the snd_hda_intel driver, removing asound.state, and start X again. With Ubuntu passthrough always worked though.
With Arch (64bit) the problem is even worse, now playback of a stereo stream through flash also permanently disables DD5.1/DTS passthrough.
Output through the usual mini-jack outputs always works.
