Hi all,
Have just crossed over from Ubuntu to Arch to cut my teeth a little more. I have followed the instructions on using dd to copy image to usb for installation and the alternative unetbootin to no avail. When the bios boots to the usb it doesn't reconise anything on the usb even though i can see that it's all there.
And I did copy the image to a freshly formatted ext4 usb and used /dev/sdc instead of /dev/sdc1
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Which image did you use? With the methods you used it "should" work. Can you describe what exactly happens when you try to boot up the usb?

How far do you get and do you get any err msg? You probably need to make the partition bootable if the files are there but it can't boot. You can do this with fdisk.

Thanks you both for the reply,
I used the archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso image
When I booted from the dd built usb image it displayed ISOLINUX 3.86 2010-04-01 EHDD Copyright (C) 1194-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al
Unknown keyword in configuration file: "text that looks like it from another world"
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!
boot:
And from unetbootin I get:-
Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key
Thanks,

I can reproduce this. For now, use the dual or netinstall image, they work. I'll do a quick test with the rest of them and file a bug report.

Thanks for your time, I'll try the netinstall.iso

OK, very very weird.
After reading your post, I dd'd the core i686 onto an usb stick which had the netinstall x64 on it. Got the exact same error message you posted and I have never seen before.
Next I tried the dual-boot, it worked. Again copied over the core i686 - and it booted up fine...

Yeah it is weird. I downloaded the netinstall.iso and have almost finished the install flawlessly without a problem.

I've got the same problem trying to install the x86 version (core) onto a Dell Inspiron 570. I'll try the netinstall image although I note the 2010.05 image is already out.

OK, just burned the net-install image and I get the same error as the OP.
I don't know why, but I checked the BIOS and the SATA mode is set to AHCI the other option is ATA so I changed it,rebooted and now the core and netinstall will load to the ususal grub menu to start the arch installer.
As this box has win7 already installed on it changing the SATA mode to ATA causes the system to continually reboot this doesn't really help me progress beyond this point.

OK all!
I can't resolve the issue of the windows7 AHCI/SATA mode issue without probably borking my win7 install. So I decided to burn the image to a USB device to see if this would help, and guess what? It does! I can run the arch installer and access my hard disc correctly.
The only issue I've run up against is that the inspiron 570 uses a broadcom gigabit adaptor using the tg3 module which for some reason doesn;t get detected properly by the kernel. After a couple of searches I found the following that does resolve the network issue.
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=724691
the bit about forcing removal of the tg3 module and loading broadcom and then tg3 is the bit that helped me out here.
I'll look to use parted to shrink my win7 install and go for a dual boot for now.
I hope this may help others in the same position.
Cheers

just burnt a cd with 2010_05 core-dual on it. boots file
briefly get two lines saying same thing
Unknown keyword in configuration file: IPAPPEND
Unknown keyword in configuration file: IPAPPEND
Then goes to the install menu though. expecting it'll work.
though to mention the above lines above when doing a search here and finding this thread.
UPDATE: yep, works/installs ARCH fine.

If you need to create a bootable live arch usb, you can't use Unetbootin it doesn't work for the new arch kernal. The only way I found out how to create one was with a windows utility called Win32 Image Writer which can be downloaded here.
Most of the question asked can be solved just by reading:

Pacman Man.
