Strange issues with AGP Radeon 3450 LE using radeon driver

Backstory if you care to read:
The box I'm currently using as my main box and (sadly enough) for gaming is a 5+ year old Athlon XP machine that I'm working on replacing when I have the money. For now I need to make it last though. Impressively, even though I keep it running almost 24 hours a day and do a lot of hashing etc. on it, the approximately 8 year old WD 160gig drive on it still works and doesn't have a single bad sector on it, not even one that's been mapped out (I checked with smartctl). The video I had it running on was an NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTS AGP card using the proprietary drivers. However, recently the memory on it mystery went bad even though I wasn't overclocking. So I dug out an older GeForce 5600 Ultra card only to find out that support had been dropped from the current proprietary drivers. The legacy driver completely failed to work for me. So for awhile I was running on Nouveau which actually worked way better than the nv drivers for 2d (even had KMS working) but I got fed up with the complete lack of 3d after awhile.

Anyway, as a hold over and because I'm tired of dealing with proprietary drivers I went ahead and bought an ATI Radeon HD 3450 LE (AGP) as a holdover. So, using the wiki, I got things mostly working with my new card using the radeon driver (couldn't get radeonhd to see my display). 3d mostly works, even though 3d is a work in progress, and 2d seems to just about completely work. I couldn't get KMS working but I'll look into that later.

The main problem is this weird freezing thing I get where x.org just seems to completely hang until, strangely enough, I move the mouse cursor then it starts refreshing the display again. If I'm watching a video in fullscreen and it happens however, I lose all input and have to reboot even though the machine apparently isn't hard frozen. Fullscreen SDL apps like dosbox don't have any problems though.

I've also gotten some weird errors that I can't seem to find much info on using google. A few mailing list posts but they are all unresolved. An error I get is when I run glxgears or glxinfo:

IRQ's not enabled, falling back to busy waits: 2 0

Also when I close x.org out I get some sort of error about setting the MTRR.

I also had like a million memory errors showing up in dmesg but that was actually fixed by adding the nopat option to my grub config.

So, basically I'm trying to figure out if there is something wrong with my setup or if these are simply known bugs with the driver that will get fixed upstream if I just wait. I know I'm not using one of the more well supported ati chipsets at the moment.

Here's the relevant parts from my xorg.conf:

Section "Module"
        Load "dbe"
        Load "dri"
        Load "drm"
        Load "extmod"
        Load "glx"
        Load "record"
        Load "xtrap"
        Load "freetype"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Card0"
        Driver "radeon"
        Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
        Option "DRI" "on"
        Option "AGPMode" "8"
        Option "EXAVSync" "yes"
        Option "DNAForXv" "yes"
        #Option "DynamicPM" "on"
        #Option "ClockGating" "on"
EndSection

In the Device section I've tried commenting everything out but the Driver line just to see if the driver wasn't like one of the options I had but it didn't change anything.

One last thing, I'm currently using the xf86-video-ati-git package which seems to have increased performance a little but hasn't fixed anything else.

Re: Strange issues with AGP Radeon 3450 LE using radeon driver

Here's my x.org log. Seems pretty normal, only a few errors. One of them is a HAL input error though so that might have something to do with it:

Re: Strange issues with AGP Radeon 3450 LE using radeon driver

Well, I've given up on the open driver for now due to the fact that I can't watch videos without locking up X. I figure the r600 chipset just isn't supported well enough yet. So I've gone ahead and installed the fglrx drivers. So far they're working way better than they used to in the past, which is good enough for now. I'll just stick with this driver until my card starts looking better on the feature matrix here: http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature.

The whole reason why I went from NVIDIA to ATI is because of AMD opening up the ATI video specs. Sure the radeon driver doesn't have the greatest card support or performance now but it will eventually, it's more future proof. I don't really care if the NVIDIA driver "works" as long as it remains closed. And yes I have been burned directly by that fact. Meanwhile, the nouveau driver will take forever to reach completion as it depends completely on reverse engineering a closed driver.

I wonder what Stallman's current stance on AMD/ATI is:

EDIT: Already got fglrx to flip out on me once so far while trying to switch from a fullscreen opengl game to a VT. Tons of graphical corruption but I was able to cleanly reboot.
EDIT2: fglrx sucks but I've got 2d and I've got video at least.

Re: Strange issues with AGP Radeon 3450 LE using radeon driver

Well the new 10.6 version of the Catalyst drivers are half broken. I'm getting black widgets in firefox which I was able to fix with a workaround I found where you force the driver to use XAA. However, when xserver recently updated this broke all acceleration, making windows redraw very slowly and videos not scale. If I disabled the workaround the black widgets were back. Oh yeah, I was also getting a horrible memory leak that would freeze my box after about 30 minutes.

So screw it, I'm back on the open radeon driver and it's working much better since just a month ago. Checking the feature matrix on x.org it looks like 2d is fully supported now for anything older than evergreen. I even have 3d mostly working like it says. Pretty amazing progress. This is exactly why I made the switch to AMD/ATI. About the only thing that doesn't work right now is GPU clock throttling.

Seriously unless you need fully working 3d now, I'd suggest to anyone buying a new video card for Linux to get either any radeon older than evergreen or wait until evergreen support is better and just get that. I can't believe people are still suggesting NVIDIA over ATI on just about every forum I go to, with the progress that's being made. I remember just a few years ago reading all these posts on different sites from linux users begging either NVIDIA or ATI to just open up their specs, saying that they'd switch to whoever did it first. Well, that's basically what I've just done.
