By following the wireless how-to i managed to get wireless working during installation but after booting into the new system I followed the same steps again but now no longer have iwconfig installed and no connection.
Is not having iwconfig a problem connecting to WPA2?

Last time I checked iwconfig there was not a way to connect to WPA2 using iwconfig. wpa_supplicant is used instead. (if you used iwconfig to connect to a WPA Network, You're right)
You can put the package files on the USB and install them using pacman -U, or makepkg -i. Watch the dependencies of each, here's a list of dependencies for wpa_supplicant and iwconfig(wireless_tools).
wpa_supplicant : Depends On : openssl dbus-core>=1.2.4 readline>=6.0 libnl
wireless_tools (iwconfig) : Depends On : glibc
