lightwight word/doc processing program

Hello guys,

It sometimes happens that you have to view or edit word/.doc documents. On linux I only know about openoffice, abiword and koffice that are able to do this. But I'm looking for a more lightweight approach, means an application that would fit for 'LnF Awards 2010 - The best Light & Fast apps of 2010'. smile

Are there any useable alternatives?

Oh forgot about that. Yes you're right but it's a bit unhandy to always upload it on google docs and then downloading it again.

In this case I would prefer an offline application.

Isn't there an option to view your gmail attachments in Google Docs? Seems reasonable since if you get the doc file in an email it's on a server - and so is the Google Docs application. (I use Gmail as webmail)
Maybe you _can_ use it offline?

I don't know what is the current state of affairs - the post is two years old.

I agree it's not the lightest & most straightforward method.
Using antiword or sth similar probably is out of the question.

A few months ago, I had same question, I went through this list. I think Ted is one can be qualified as lightweight. But 1) it's a RTF processor 2) comparing the interface/processing methods to OO.o Writer (or MS Word), I couldn't get used to it. (I am still using OO.o Writer)

About Google Docs dl/ul, I think we can see it as another feature: Also backup solution. The only thing to deal is minimize the dl/ul process. Maybe there is already a program can help you sync docs with only one command? (I can help write one if someone really needs)

If you only need to view those .doc, antiword may be for you. (Is in extra)

If you just need to read them, catdoc from extra works quite well. I tend to stay away from writing .doc files, and just send back a text file smile
