LXDE and qgtkstyle

With older versions of LXDE, in order to get qgtkstyle to work (for Skype, VLC and whatnot) you could just disable the LXDE settings daemon and use GTK2_RC_FILES="$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0", and it would work properly.

But as of now the settings daemon seems to be mandatory.

Is there any way to make qgtkstyle work with it? I realize I could create a .gtkrc-2.0 file and add the relevant line to /etc/profile anyway, but that interferes with the settings daemon (prevents GTK themes from being changed properly by lxappearance).
