reset graphics card with KMS?

I realize that one of the big perks of KMS is the ability to switch between X and the consoles without resetting the graphics card, but...

I seem to run into issues in some games where the graphics get all mangled in X. Restarting the X server does nothing to correct them, but rebooting does. I suspect that in the olden days, switching to a text console and back would've given the video card the proper kick in the arse, but how does one issue such a kick now that we have KMS?

(Would prefer not to do a full reboot every time this happens.)

~Felix.

PS: Disabling KMS seems to be a no-go after the last pacman -Syu, as xf86-video-intel-legacy has disappeared, and that was the driver I needed. When I add "nomodeset" to my kernel line, X won't start (except possibly in vesa, but that would probably not do well enough for games...)

Re: reset graphics card with KMS?

You mention 'xf86-video-intel-legacy' so probably you have an old intel card - so do I. I get a messed up console after quiting X, but it used to work with some old xorg-server, it doesn't with the one I got. I don't play games but I've checked starcraft and death rally on wine and both worked fine.
I have i686
xorg-server 1.6.3.901-1
xf86-video-intel-legacy 2.3.2-3

xf86-video-intel-legacy 2.3.2-3 for x86_64

Re: reset graphics card with KMS?

Maybe try playing with xrandr; temporarily change the resolution or something if you want to reset the graphics
