Background noise on headphones

Hello,

I`m fairly new to arch linux (just did a fresh reinstall yesterday) and to linux in general. After all the configuration everything seems to work just fine. When I tried listening to music on my headphones I heard a constant buzzing/hertz sound in the background. I tried playing around with the volume, the mic volume is off and I have on just the Master and PCM. Note that this only happens when I plug in my headphones.
This is becoming very annoying so I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

Re: Background noise on headphones

Maybe it's an ALSA problem, maybe your CPU is throwing out interference when in a particular power-saving state.

First thing to do is google your PC model with "linux", and see if others report the same problem.

Re: Background noise on headphones

Thanks for answering. Unfortunately, I haven`t found anything helpful. I thought it might be an ALSA problem so I removed ALSA and installed OSS, with no luck.

Re: Background noise on headphones

Might be interference from the graphics chipset... if something's being redrawn all the time?

(I'm assuming the laptop also runs Windows and the symptom doesn't show there. Otherwise the answer could be less sensitive headphones...)
