ATI Radeon Xpress 200M and hot CPU

Hi all,

Ever since I installed Arch I've had the problem where my CPU would run too hot. I haven't been able to find any thing in htop relating to any CPU usage so I just figured my laptop needed a clean. Now, almost 2 months later the issue persists and I found it could be related to my ATI card and the open-source drivers.

According to the forums here I should try installing Catalyst, the proprietary driver for my card, but the problem I've run in to is that it's an older card, namely an Xpress 200M. Because it's an older card it's not supported by the version of Catalyst on the AUR.

Could someone guide me on how I should go about installing Catalyst for my Xpress 200M? Or someone with the same problem that's fixed it. smile

Thanks in advance!

There's no more information I can add and I'd like my post to be noticed.

I've already searched and done my own research before posting here.

Well, you could at least wait 24 hours before bumping. Anyway, I don't know about installing an old catalyst driver, but is cpufreq working?

Re: ATI Radeon Xpress 200M and hot CPU

Well, almost 19 hours between posting and bumping - it's not like I waited an hour and threw a hissy because no one noticed me.

And I don't use cpufreq. I've had a look at the wiki just now and it seems like something that could be useful but I'm almost 100% sure that my problems relate to my graphics driver. Thanks for the suggestion though and I'll have a look to see if installing cpufrequtils (or maybe Powernowd if it's better) has any positive effect.

Edit: cpufreq didn't alter the frequency like I'd hoped but Powernowd is working splendidly. Thanks for the suggestion. I don't think it's solved my problem but I'll post back.
