I'm using Gnome and /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache is giving me a lot of trouble. When there is an upgrade, this file gets re-written and some stuff is put in front of nautilus, which is my file browser of choice. I have to manually edit this file every time. I understand that update-mime-database will recreate this file (the wrong way), what I don't know is what configuration update-mime-database is looking at.
Is there a way to control how mimeinfo.cache is updated? Or maybe I need to put a customized list somewhere inside my home directory?
-----edit-----
OK, it seems that I do not have to worry about this file. All I have to do is to create a defaults.list file inside /usr/share/applications/ or ~/.local/share/applications/, specifying the desirable associations.

I thought it was an old thread, but the information is not stale.
