ignore interface in NetworkManager?

it seems like this question has been around for a while, however i was not able to find a solution in Arch that would completely prevent NetworkManager from managing a particular network interface.
there is one solution described in the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Net … ic_devices and it works to the degree that NM won't try to connect to networks and get IP, however the interface is still polled for link status (wired) or scan results (wifi), meaning it is still /managed/.
the question is how to disable NM _completely_ on a specific interface, so that the interface in _not managed_ (according to nm-applet). in Ubuntu it was done by describing the interface in /etc/network/interfaces, i tried doing the same in /etc/rc.conf however it has no effect.

any hints?
