Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

Hello. I've spent most of the afternoon trying to make my touchpad work as intended, but without any luck. The touchpad works, but without scrolling (of any kind) and I can't disable it with syndaemon, because it complains that there's no synaptic device available.

I did install the synaptic drivers. pacman -Qs synaptic output:

local/xf86-input-synaptics 1.2.1-1 (xorg-input-drivers)
    synaptics driver for notebook touchpads

I tried both methods available in the wiki (xorg and hal), but none worked for me. This is the output of some (I hope) relevant commands:

I can't see anywhere a synaptic device, what I'm missing? I'm sure that's something really stupid and yet I can't realize what I'm doing wrong.

Does anyone can give me a hint? Thanks for reading.

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

Same here.

I saw something in an Ubuntu bug tracking list in Launchpad about setting "i8042.nomux" to kernel parameters. I tested it with Ubuntu but it didn't work; indeed, the touchpad stopped working completely until i've undone this.

Maybe it's worth a try in an Arch install, something i don't have here at the moment.

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

I checked Dell website, but they don't supply special drivers or instructions. However, they do sell this notebook with Ubuntu, so for sure it's possible to make the touchpad work (I bought it with W7 because they won't sell Core2Solo model without OS).

<off-topic>
rb, I live in Brazil, I asked for a W7 refund and things are going well, it seems i'll get it.
</off-topic>

Well, I installed Arch, so now I'll try the tip I posted before.

Edit: it didn't work sad

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

Still no luck on this matter. Of course I'll keep trying until it works. I'll let you new if something comes up smile

OT: I gave the W7 license to my sister. Her laptop came with W7 starter, what a piece of crap! So, no refound here tongue

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

I had a bit of a problem with my DELL Studio too with xf86-input-synaptics 1.2.1-1, but, everything works perfect with the driver from testing xf86-input-synaptics 1.2.2-2.

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

I think I'll try that, because I still couldn't manage to get it work. May I ask how did you installed those drivers? It's safe to enable [testing] in /etc/pacman.conf, install the drivers and then disable testing repos?

Yea, It is safe even if causes issues you can easily revert to the old one.
Yes, Enable the [testing] then,

#pacman -Sy
#pacman -S xf86-input-synaptics

Restart X or reboot.
If it works then,

Then edit /etc/pacman.conf and add

IgnorePkg   = xf86-input-synaptics

If it doesnot or causes issues then comment [Testing]  and run the above 2 cmds.

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

Did you try adding the following lines to your xorg.conf ?
    Option "VertEdgeScroll" "true"         #vertical scrolling when dragging along the right edge.
    Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "true"        #horizontal scrolling when dragging along the bottom edge.

Dont use hal,
Also since your kernel fails to identify the device, make sure your kernel is up-to-date, Or Install the kernel from
testing, My Dell is perfect with the 2.6.34 version from testing. While you are at it upgrade the xorg.

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

I added those lines to the xorg.conf, but it didn't work (I tried all the steps in the wiki).

I'm running kernel 2.6.33. If I upgrade to testing, is possible to downgrade to 'regular' kernel? I mean, in case of something goes wrong.

/EDIT: I just keep getting 'unable to find a synaptics device'

I tried both xorg-conf methods from the wiki (ALPS and non-ALPS) without any luck

Yes, same as in post #8 only this time the package is kernel26

Edit: Might need kernel26-headers kernel26-firmware also.

Didn't work either. Still get the "unable to find a synaptics device" message error. I officially give up...

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

I have a Gateway NV 5927U, with an alps touchpad. It seems to be a touchpad with support for multitouch, gestures and stuff, at least that I can tell after using it in Windows.
It seems that this alps touchpad uses a whole new protocol, even if you manage it to get recognized by the kernel, you can't achieve any touchpad functionality.

See https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14660

Maybe this alps touchpad model is similar to the touchpad in your Dell, just to let you know.

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

hey, i have scrolling happening! unfortunately my lack of attention to detail is a pain because i guess i wasn't expecting it to work and wasn't paying much attention to the steps i took. generally though, i removed xf86-input-synaptics and anything to do with it etcetera and rebooted. started x with no xorg.conf then re-installed xf86-input-synaptics, generated an xorg.conf file with X -configure... copied the generated file to /etc/X11/, logged out, logged in and gentlemen, we have lift off, the driver had loaded.YAY.

here is my xorg.conf, i would imagine all i gotta do is add the details to it re synaptics seeing as the driver had loaded;

not sure if this helps anyone due to my lack of attention, but it say's one thing... it does work. i do notice however that synaptics isn't mentioned so i assume its loaded from elsewhere??? anybody know from where? i'm confused again ;-)

Probably it is because your touchpad is working in PS2 compatibility mode. Check with

xinput list

I have my alps touchpad working too, but in PS2 compatibility mode. I had to create an /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf with

options psmouse proto=imps

in it to use vertical scrolling.

Have a look inside /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ wink

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

This is very fishy - I have a Vostro V13 as well, and my touchpad works juts as expected - while installing X, I had first installed the keyboard and mouse drivers as listed in the Arch wiki, and then the synaptics drivers. Maybe the mouse drivers need to be installed separately from the synaptics drivers? I do not have testing enabled nor do I have an xorg.conf.

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

manzdagratiano, thank you very much for your respond. Actually, you are a person I and community searching for. Please stay in touch. I have some questions to you. Could you please tell us, what kind of v13 do you have. It came with linux or windows7? Is it celeron, penyium solo or co2duo based? Is horizontal scrolling working? Could you please share your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file? Are you running kernel version 2.6.35? What is the output of uname -a command. Thanks for respond.
