nVidia GPU fan control

I've done some digging to no avail.  Google hasn't produced a result for me, so I figured I'd turn here.

I'm looking for (simple) GPU fan control in the console.  As it stands, I have a box that loads GDM for the sole purpose of throttling the GPU fan.  nvidia_settings can control it, but only if the X drivers are loaded first (as far as I can tell).

IS there a way to contol the GPU fan exclusively from the console?

Philosophy is looking for a black cat in a dark room. Metaphysics is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there. Religion is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there and shouting "I found it!". Science is looking for a black cat in a dark room with a flashlight.

Same situation.  Does not work in the console unless X is loaded and the nvidia drivers are active and running.  (GeForce 7800 GS)

Error: adjustment of the fanspeed isn't supported on your type of videocard!
