OpenOffice's KDE4 Integration is unusable

(I also posted about this over at the official OpenOffice forums)
Hallo,

So I'd like to report a bug to the OpenOffice people about how the KDE4 integration (with the KDE4 file dialogue) is unusable and crashes every five minutes. Through the command line I turn on KDE4 integration ( OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde4 soffice) and then after it crashes (usually when I attempt to do anything with the file dialogue), I get this:

OpenOffice.org(7949)/kdecore (services) KMimeTypeFactory::parseMagic: Now parsing  "/usr/share/mime/magic"
OpenOffice.org(7949)/kdecore (services) KMimeTypeFactory::parseMagic: Now parsing  "/home/kalinda/.local/share/mime/magic"
X-Error: RenderBadPicture (invalid Picture parameter)
        Major opcode: 152
        Minor opcode: 8
        Resource ID:  0x3400b5c
        Serial No:    21906 (21906)
These errors are reported asynchronously,
set environment variable SAL_SYNCHRONIZE to 1 to help debugging

So I put "SAL_SYNCHRONIZE=1" into the /etc/profile.d/openoffice.sh file and then run the KDE4 integration command again, but it doesn't debug, it just gives me the same error message as above. OpenOffice ignores everything I put into the profile file. I can't force it to use KDE integration all the time either, even if I wanted to. Is there another file I should be putting this stuff into? Or do I need to recompile OOo in order to enable debugging?

This is a pretty serious issue for anyone who just installs OOo on a new KDE4 install, since it defaults to the KDE4 integration and the program is thus unusable. I'm surprised no one has fixed this yet; it's been around since before OOo 3.2.0 even came out of the beta stage. It's like someone did the bare bones code for this feature, then never bothered to bug fix it and yet they put it into a release anyway.

Thanks!

My openoffice looks quite good with qtcurve and no other options...
You could try this package in AUR, but I don't know how well it works.

Re: OpenOffice's KDE4 Integration is unusable

Actually, OpenOffice looks fine with KDE4 integration enabled, it's the fact that trying to use the KDE4 file dialogue crashes the program. So it's impossible to save or open files.

But if that package will let me use the KDE file dialogues, then I'll give it a shot.

Re: OpenOffice's KDE4 Integration is unusable

And Kalinda? Have you tried and succeeded? I've been looking for qt dialogues but no joy and I am reluctant to install go-openoffice-qt-native 'cos it pulls in mono sad

toad@deskarch 1003\6 ~ > sudo packer -S go-openoffice-qt-native

Aur Targets    (1): go-openoffice-qt-native
Pacman Targets (3): gperf mono perl-archive-zip

Proceed with installation? [Y/n]

Re: OpenOffice's KDE4 Integration is unusable

I haven't tried yet, no. I might not if it uses mono. Is mono really system intensive?

I don't mind continuing to use the GTK dialogues for now, I was really just looking for a way to debug the errors I was getting in OOo so I could report the bug and maybe someone would fix it.

Not as far as I know but it it has M$ dabbling in it. afaic a good reason to stay well clear until I _really_ need it...

Are you sure it is crashing, or is it simply hanging and takes a while?

On my quad-core tower, it takes ~10 seconds for the "Open..." KDE dialogue in Open Office to appear.

Re: OpenOffice's KDE4 Integration is unusable

No, it definitely crashes. The program just completely closes.

Wait, it's working for you? How did you manage that? The fact that it still behaves pretty much exactly the same as it did in the 3.2.0 beta releases almost makes me think this is something wrong on my end. Except it behaves the same on my laptop with a fresh install sad

To be honest, I almost put my foot in my mouth.  smile

In GTk, it stalls for 10 seconds.  By forcing the environment variable, it responds instantly, and still does not crash.

 [marcus@ARCH ~]$ OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde4 soffice
OpenOffice.org(9180)/kdecore (services) KMimeTypeFactory::parseMagic: Now parsing  "/usr/share/mime/magic"
OpenOffice.org(9180)/kdecore (services) KMimeTypeFactory::parseMagic: Now parsing  "/home/marcus/.local/share/mime/magic"
[marcus@ARCH ~]$

OOorg 3.2.1

I *am* not using Oxygen though, I am running Bespin window decorations.  Could be something goofed on your end or Oxygen.

Re: OpenOffice's KDE4 Integration is unusable

2nd thought.  How did you tell OOorg to use KDE4 dialogues?  Are you using gtk-qt-engine?

Re: OpenOffice's KDE4 Integration is unusable

I am not using Oxygen, I'm using qtcurve since it's the only thing (besides Oxygen, which I'm a bit tired of looking at, lol) that lets me have uniform look with all my applications (I use Firefox and on my laptop, WiCD for wireless). I am using gtk-qt-engine, yes, with qtcurve selected. I wish I could use Bespin, but it has no GTK counterpart.

I ran this in the command line to get the KDE4 integration: OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde4 soffice

I should note it behaves the same on my laptop, where I'm just using Oxygen, but I do have gtk-qt-engine enabled and I'm just using the GTK Oxygen theme with it. So maybe it is gtk-qt-engine's fault.

As an aside, my OOo also stalls for a few seconds (using GTK) when I click the open button. It's weird.

Re: OpenOffice's KDE4 Integration is unusable

Go to options -> General -> Use openoffice dialogs. This helped me when I had the problem with crashing dialogs.

Re: OpenOffice's KDE4 Integration is unusable

Ok, so apparently all I needed to do was reboot the computer in order to get the openoffice.sh file to listen to the environment variable. So now when I open OOo from my menu, it automatically uses the KDE4 integration. Unfortunately it still crashes. In order to enable debugging (I think), I tried this: OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde4 SAL_SYNCHRONIZE=1 soffice

And when it crashed, it gave me this:

OpenOffice.org(15166)/kdecore (services) KMimeTypeFactory::parseMagic: Now parsing  "/usr/share/mime/magic"
OpenOffice.org(15166)/kdecore (services) KMimeTypeFactory::parseMagic: Now parsing  "/home/kalinda/.local/share/mime/magic"
X-Error: RenderBadPicture (invalid Picture parameter)
        Major opcode: 152
        Minor opcode: 8
        Resource ID:  0x38011c6
        Serial No:    61543 (61543)

It doesn't tell me to enable debugging anymore, but the information it provides doesn't seem like it would be helpful to the developers. I wonder if I should report the bug anyway.

Um, I don't really want to use the openoffice dialogues, as they aren't very good. I like the whole sidebar where you can add your own folders and whatnot. That's why I am alright using the GTK dialogues for now, but I still like the KDE ones more.

Re: OpenOffice's KDE4 Integration is unusable

I am also experiencing the same and it is really not expected by any user. I had also reported regarding this to them. Hope as early as possible get the solution.
