Trying to install GNOME. I'm a noob hence installing it on VMWare - Windows.
- Installed off archlinux-2009.08-core-x86_64.iso
- Updated pacman (#pacman -Syy)
What could be the problem?

Did you try to remove the headers package?
CPU-optimized Linux-ck packages @ Repo-ck • AUR packages • Zsh and other configs

Try installing linux-api-headers first, before installing gnome entirely.

maybe you mean making
#pacman -Syu
-Syy is wrong!
and maybe you need to say Yes when pacman asks for removing one of conflicting packages

pacman -Syu first and then pacman -S gnome
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I would advice to reboot the computer, remove the CD and then trying to install the GNOME again from the net again.
It happened to me when I was installing Arch from the CD and the apparently new packages from the net had some conflicts with the old ones.
Or, of course try pacman -Syu as suggested first and then tell us if it works

Have you followed the Beginner's Guide?
Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.

Thanks for all the inputs guys.
Steps performed to resolve the issue:
- Rebooted the VM. (This was the key) =P
- #pacman -Syu
- #pacman -S gnome
Now installing extras.
