Wlan0 Spontaneously Dies

After 30 - 60 minutes on wifi, my wlan0 mysteriously disappears. If I try to restart it I receive this error,

[root@nikolai karam]# ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill

I'm using wicd on an Acer Aspire 3810T (with the iwlwifi-5000-ucode driver) and have seen this issue on two different wireless networks. Does anyone have any ideas?

I also have the same problem with the same driver. I get the same error message when I try to turn on the wifi.

Try disabling the wifi kill switch in your bios.

I thought about verifying that but did not cause I was thinking hey if it was working why would things have changed.
The wifi was turned off in the bios.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Wlan0 Spontaneously Dies

Hi there.

I had the same problem. Installed the package "rfkill" and did the following:

[root@turuzzu]# rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: yes
        Hard blocked: no

This means there's a block on the RF kill switch (soft in my case).

Unblocked it:

[root@turuzzu]# rfkill unblock 0
[root@turuzzu]# rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

and all was working good.

Hope it may help

Re: Wlan0 Spontaneously Dies

wow..... all i can say is wow.....

so this is my mistake, but i figured id post here just IN CASE somebody makes the same mistake *I* just did. i took arancedisicilia's advice and used the rfkill package to try to find my problem. i had soft and hard locks on two interfaces...

long story short... make sure to check the actual wifi switch on the side of the laptop... (facepalm for sure!). once i flipped it, both soft and hard locks were removed.

to be honest i didnt even really know it was there... new laptop...

none the less... good luck everybody.

But leaving hard switch without attention...
