brightness laptop hp pavilion dv1000

HELLO!
my laptop works well overall in audio, video and network
bright buttons work..but i want to tweak more the brightness
cuz the interval in the bright buttons is like 90% and 100%
i have already tried different methods :

* Using xbacklight did not work: No display has backlight capabilities ...

* Gnome Brightness Aplet just shows a red sign and is not working

* /proc/acpi/video - > not existent, modprobed video module -> /proc/acpi/video is there but empty

* nvclock -f -S  not working, complaining about not compatible etc

* xrandr Method --output ... --SET BACKLIGHT ... (not working)

i hope someone can help me...

Re: brightness laptop hp pavilion dv1000

Maybe you can change the gamma with the nvidia driver or something. (Under Windows I had a tool to change the gamma that worked with my Radeon...)

i already know how to change the gamma with this command
xgamma -gamma -.500 but is not enought
there must be something else that fix the backlight

Re: brightness laptop hp pavilion dv1000

I do not have your laptop, but, based upon other suggestions, I presume your system is Nvidia based.  You might verify that with lspci

If there is not an entry under /proc, then how about under /sys ?

Goggle seems to suggest : /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness might be your hook. Look around in /sys for that or similar files. YMMV - Again, I do not have this chipset, so this is pure conjecture.

Re: brightness laptop hp pavilion dv1000

Also, Other goggle sources suggest the use of the kernel module sony-laptop, even though you are not cursed with one of those machines.

Re: brightness laptop hp pavilion dv1000

No, Forget the Sony stuff with Intel.  It seems to only apply to Nvidia chipsets.

Could you post the output of lspci and sudo lspci -v ??

Re: brightness laptop hp pavilion dv1000

Well, that all looks reasonable and very similar to my Pavilion DV4 [which works just dandy]

Is HAL running ?

what are the outputs of  :

ps -ef | grep acpi
ps -ef | grep hal

??

Re: brightness laptop hp pavilion dv1000

And sorry, I am off to bed.  You might also post the output of :
dmesg | grep ACPI

It will take a bit of effort to comb through -- I'll try to get back to you by tomorrow afternoon (GMT+7)

Re: brightness laptop hp pavilion dv1000

Sorry, I'm running out of altitude, airspeed and ideas.

We had an exchange of PMs the other night and I wanted to create a brief summary for this thread.

In general, We were looking at why there were no ACPI functions to support your backlight.  After making sure your kernel was up to date, we were able to find /proc files for brightness related to your various video outputs.  Unfortunately, they all reported that the function was not supported.

There was a suggestion in the dmesg out that you try pci=use_crs on the kernel command line -- I had you try that to no avail.

Lastly, I suggested you try modprobing each of the backlight drivers in turn (starting with generic).  There was some confusion as to how to specify the driver name.  I just sent a PM clearing up the syntax.

Like I said, I just wanted to add this to keep the forum in sync with our PMs
