You asked us to close your other thread and that you may go back to Mandriva. Impatience isn't going to solve your problem.

Hello  skottish

Almost a month ago I had posted my query. Again requested help. No response. That is the reason, I requested that it be closed.
Do you still think I am impatient?.

At least now, pl. help

What exactly isn't working? Try to open the VCD from the command line and see if there are any errors.

Re: [CLOSED]VLC Player not playing VCD'S, but plays the same in XP

hello skottish
the problem is not with all VCD's, but some. Some VCD's play without any trouble. What I mean to say is, the same VLC player played those VCD in Mandriva 2010, PClinuxOS2007, winxp.

Disc is not damaged.

Arch, or rather KDE / VLC player does not give any error message. It simply stays unresponsive. (My daughter, 8 years, keeps nagging me, saying I spoiled everything)

Re: [CLOSED]VLC Player not playing VCD'S, but plays the same in XP

San2ban,

Yes, please try Mplayer. VLC and Mplayer share a large part of thier code base as both extensively use FFmpeg libraries. If it works in Mplayer and not Arch's VLC, it may help to detect where the problem is coming from.

Re: [CLOSED]VLC Player not playing VCD'S, but plays the same in XP

I have to get this out.  I'm putting this in a quote so you can promptly ignore it ...

Synthead wrote:

We all donate our time to try to help people on this board without asking for anything in return.  If you are getting upset, you are forgetting the countless hours everybody has contributed to make linux a reality.  If you met all of us in person and saw that we also have daily lives, you might reconsider what you have to feel angry about.  Besides, I have a thread I started on this board since mid-2008 about a touchscreen for a Toughbook and to this day I haven't gotten it to be operational, and when I get around to poking and prodding it more, I still post discoveries in it.  Everybody in this thread could give you the RTFM, but like everyone else, I'm not going to.  I'm going to help you, and this is after waking up at 6:30AM for my job that I ended up working at for 9 1/2 hours.  My $0.02.

Arch Linux is an extremely minimalistic distro.  The largest, fattest install possible by the installer compromises of a console, simple command line programs, and development libraries.  Everything you want to do with it has a learning curve, and unless you're trying to avoid learning linux, you're going to have to teach yourself along the way.  Also, please remind yourself that Arch's packages are usually built directly from sources with very little tweaked, or for that matter, packed with them.  With Arch, you're pretty much getting the full-immersion experience with linux, and you're going to have to build your whole house with a hammer and nails.  There are several things that won't necessarily work out-of-the-box either because of the countless ways applications can be configured.  With Arch, you're going to have to understand this and hang in there until you can stand on your own feet, but you'll be greatly rewarded!  Mostly everything you will learn with this distro is linux and nothing else, not Ubuntu, CentOS, or Mint-specific stuff, you're getting the real deal.

With that aside, most command-line programs report things to the terminal output, technically called the stdout.  After trying Mplayer like a few of the guys said above, launch a terminal, type "vlc" in it and hit enter, and watch the stdout as you load the VCD and try to play it.  More than likely an error will pop up.  Let us know what happens.

Re: [CLOSED]VLC Player not playing VCD'S, but plays the same in XP

Does dmesg outputs something useful as the error in vlc is triggered?
-edit-
I'm assuming that xp and arch run natively on the same machine, right?

The drive in your arch machine clearly can't read some of the discs data. Chances are that the drive in the xp machine can read it because it has better error correction.

Re: [CLOSED]VLC Player not playing VCD'S, but plays the same in XP

Hmm, interesting.  I agree with randomguy on this one.  Does the XP machine have a CD writer in it?  Make a copy and try to play it (or just make an iso, mount it on your Arch box, and play it over the LAN).

(edit) Oh also, testdisk can try to "repair" CDs and make an image too, you might want to look into it.  Read the manpage for it (man testdisk) after installing it (pacman -S testdisk).  This process can get a little technical, but testdisk has always been amazing at data recovery for me.

You should have pointed to this from the beginning, like randomguy said, it is 99% an hardware issue with your cd/dvd reader.
testdisk may be an option, but i wouldn't count on it too much for data recovery in your case, because vcd filesystem doesn't support any error correction mechanism (that's why they provide more space for data).
i'd try to swap xp<->arch cd readers and, if the problem is solved, buy another drive wink

Re: [CLOSED]VLC Player not playing VCD'S, but plays the same in XP

hello all
Definitely, there is some problem, in the way my arch handles multi-media. I counted around 25 VCD's that do not play in ARCH. Tested all these  VCD's on m/c with PClinuxOS2007, same VLC player plays these VCD's.

Testdisk installed, but could not do much with it. Does not appear to be    a problem with drive (Toshiba-samsung, TSST corp).

VLC also hangs (sort of), 'quit' does not close it, drive does not open, etc

Dolphin file manager also does not show that a CD is inserted.

Is it a KDE issue, arch issue?

Re: [CLOSED]VLC Player not playing VCD'S, but plays the same in XP

I can't help fixing your problem but will say Everything plays in VLC in  my arch set including VCD. I think you have a serious fault in your set up do other players play them, if they do its vlc Gxine is a good player to try.

I update on a daily basis, still, this is my state.

SMPlayer also did not help in playing these 25 vcd's. I do not know Gxine, maybe for gnome?. Xine is my phon-on backend.

Re: [CLOSED]VLC Player not playing VCD'S, but plays the same in XP

Below is the message I usually get, for most  VCD's, that do not play. But as said earlier, same thing VLC plays on PCLinuxOS2007. Can somebody tell me which log the VLC is asking me to check?. I checked syslog, could not find anything.

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'vcd:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.

Re: [CLOSED]VLC Player not playing VCD'S, but plays the same in XP

San2ban are you actually reading the answers given?
Its 99.999% a hardware failure. Get a new DVD drive for your PC and all is sorted.

As mentioned before: make an iso of the VCDs on your other computer and use those to watch the movies will work too.

Please, put "yes" as answer...

Rasi
I reiterate that there is no problem with my CD drive (TSST DVDwriter)
When I un-install ARCH and load Mandriva2010, PCLinuxOS,  same drive and VLC plays all my VCD's. I have tested this

KoKoKo3k
PClinuxOS2007 and arch are on different m/c

Well...
Maybe San2Ban tried other os it in the past and vcd worked.
Anyway I'd definitely try to swap the readers between arch and xp and see if the problem persists.
