ACPI makes TTYs invisible

Hello—

I have here my first Arch installation running on a netbook (HP Compaq Mini CQ10 or somesuch).  I've managed to get things mostly working, but here's a problem I don't know how to crack: unless GRUB has acpi=off, TTYs don't show up on the screen. They are there—I can hit Ctrl-Alt-Fx and log in and do stuff blindly. What gives? Advice appreciated.

Edit: closing and reopening the lid wakes up the screen.
