[Solved] Mystery Blank Startup

What turns off the usual startup messages (e.g. stat_busy, stat_done, stat_fail)?  The transition from initcpio init and /sbin/init works.  All daemons start up as expected.  The kernel logo shows up, but the screen is blank until the login prompt (and /etc/issue) shows up.  What did I turn on/off? :-P

Thanks.

Had omitted '-c /dev/console' when calling switch_root (initcpio).
