I am not able to open a video file in xmonad by double clicking on it in nautilus. Other video players such as vlc do open. Opening a video file with mplayer in pcmanfm works but not in thunar. All of the just mentioned methods do work in Gnome. Any ideas how to fix this?

correct me if im wrong, but,
i think theres a addon/plugin for thunar that allows custom commands(or its built in).
that way you can do "mplayer %F"

In nautilus, it tries to open video files with mplayer %F which somehow doesn't work in xmonad.

oh, my bad, didnt read it properly.
make a custom command something like "terminal -e mplayer %F" or something, which should open up a terminal and do it, that way you can see error reports.

When I change the type of the mplayer.desktop file from application to terminal, it launches the terminal and mplayer. mplayer itself can play the file (no errors there), it's jut that nautilus in xmonad can't launch mplayer directly it seems.
