Apparently, my approach is incorrect, as how I've learned from another thread. Those files I've edited will be overwritten upon upgrading.
*Update*: made a "custom.conf" file inside "xorg.conf.d" and migrated those lines I had in synaptics.conf to it and it works. smile That's it, probably, I guess the "custom.conf" won't get overwritten. big_smile

Re: Xorg 1.8 moves to extra

Well, I moved my wacom tablet config information back into xorg.conf (I never figured out how to configure hal policies correctly, but it seemed to autoconfigure my tablet how I wanted it so that was okay). Anyway, now for some reason linuxwacom is treating every tablet device as if it were Absolute instead of Relative, even though I explicitly set everything to Option "Mode" "Relative" in xorg.conf and the manpage says the default for the cursor is Relative anyway.

archman-cro :

My customized 20-nvidia.conf file was updated this morning. It has not been overwritten : The update created a good old 20-nvidia.conf.pacnew

Re: Xorg 1.8 moves to extra

Why do I seem to be the only one doing what the Xorg wiki page suggests: "Users are encouraged to put custom configuration into /etc/X11/xorg.conf and leave the directory [xorg.conf.d] for configuration snippets provided by the distribution."

I do it as well. But only my dual monitor setup, which I think fits better in xorg.conf rather than some 10*-xxx.conf file. Helps me remember where I have made the changes should I need to make some more.

Re: Xorg 1.8 moves to extra

I am following the wiki suggestion as well even if just needed to add horizontal edge scrolling to the touchpad and italian keymap to the keyboard in /etx/X11/xorg.conf. I guess it would be simpler to add these options in 10-synaptics.conf and 10-evdev.conf. but I usually trust the the ArchWiki.
Maybe the Xorg page should be cleaned up a bit and report just one way of doing things.

The update was worry-free and I'm now ditching HAL. Thank you all who made it possible!

jt512 & rent0n: that part about 'users are encouraged' was taken straight from the fedora wiki, it might not be as appropriate for arch. i don't know how fedora works, but it's possible they don't produce 'pacnew' files there and just overwrite package files. it doesn't have to be our policy to encourage keeping an xorg.conf, it might be better to ditch it actually since it's probably just parsed by X for legacy support.

Thanks for the clarification, that's good to know.
In this case I guess the simplest thing is to edit the *.conf files and then compare them to *.conf.pacnew fileas after upgrades, rather than creating a brand new xorg.conf (like I did! big_smile).

At this point, I would like to hear the opinion of Arch devs about this.

Re: Xorg 1.8 moves to extra

CAn monitor setups also be done in .conf files?

Then I too can remove xorg.conf

I can't find this line in the wiki page. What's the point about this?

Yes, they can. Try 10-monitor.conf. I also suggest having a look at the wiki article.

The point is that xorg.conf.d/ gets updated by the distribution, whereas xorg.conf is fully under your personal control and will not be messed with by the distribution..

Re: Xorg 1.8 moves to extra

Well, that's only for the distribution provided conf files, and not the whole directory i.e. custom added conf files are left alone...

Making custom changes is recommended to be placed in xorg.conf, but nothing stops you from instead adding them to e.g. xorg.conf.d/custom.conf or whatever.
