Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

Hi all,

I have been lusting after one of the new netbooks such as the Toshiba mini NB305 or the MSI Wind U160 or the ASUS EEE 1001P.  These all have the Intel Atom N450 processor, are pretty lightweight, and can run for 6 or 8 or 10 hours on a charge, depending on what you do and who you believe.

In poking around I came across a review on Amazon (for the Toshiba) which reads in part:

I am writing this review to praise this machine, but also to caution anyone intending to run Linux on it, as I am doing. I have Linux running successfully on this machine, but it took some doing. I am using the beta version of Slackware 13.1, together with a custom-built kernel, because there is a problem with process scheduling with the stock kernel. Before settling on this, I tried Slackware 13 (the distribution I run on my four other computers), Arch Linux, and Ubuntu 10.04 on this machine, and ran into show-stopping problems with each of them.

The effort was worth it, because the machine works very well. But I am a (recently retired) computer professional with many years of Unix/Linux experience and the kind of fiddling I had to do is undoubtedly beyond the ability of people without the type of background I have. Having said that, I think the Linux problems are simply due to the fact that N450 machines haven't been around that long. In a matter of months, you'll be able to throw an easy-to-install version of Linux, such as Ubuntu or Mint, onto one of these machines, and it will work out of the box. We're just not quite there yet.

And so my question is: Has anybody installed Arch on one of these new netbooks?  And if so, how much pain and suffering should I expect, and do you have any tips or pointers?

Many thanks,
- Hy

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

I struggled with my Samsung N220 at first, in fact I posted a thread in Laptop forum slagging it off.  However, a few months later, I'm using it just fine.

Firstly, check the wiki, my model wasn't covered but a similar model was and the scripts worked with very little tweaking.

It will take a while to get it set up, and I recommend using powertop with your usual app base and replacing those that cause excessive wake-ups.  My biggest initial complaint was how poor battery life was, but by working out what apps were drainging stuff (conky was one, they are not always obvious) you can improve things greatly,

Another complaint was that no netbooks buttons would work, suspend was hit and miss and using the netbook as a netbook was a challenge.  I had more success breaking down laptop-mode-tools into individual components (acpid, pm-utils, cpufrequtils) and configuring them seperately.  Over time I've got a fair few tweaks in my rc.local and my netbook function buttons all work now, things such as brightness and cpu freq scaling, I also mount my ext4 partitions with relatime.

My rc.local is here and some script examples (of what you'll need to do to get certain netbook functions working) are here.  I can get about 8 hrs from my netbook now if I stay off IRC (which is another app which causes massive wakeups).

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

I've had an Asus 1005P for a couple months which has the N450 and it seems to be running fine. I didn't do any special tweaking and am getting almost 10 hours out of the battery running openbox, which was almost the same as running windows 7 that came installed.

Like Meyithi I've had most of the function buttons not working out of the box (only the screen display). I've seen guides for mapping it to scripts, but volume is the only one I'd use and can adjust that in other ways easily enough.

The only thing I've had serious issues was suspend to disk, where it seemed to restore but give segmentation faults for every command.  I think this may be a configuration issue on my part though. With the battery life I get I usually prefer to speed from suspend to ram anyway so I suspend to disk so rarely I haven't been to motivated to track it down.

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

Toschiba nb305-n410 (Atom N450)
installed Arch from USB, on preformatted disk in first attempt
custom kernel(s) 2.6.34 - default kernel is pretty slow and I removed is just after installing OS
DM - KDEmod 4.4.4 (takes 76MB at boot)
boot time 14s
loading DE ~ 8s
battery life ~9.2h (6.5W idle, camera off, SD off, wireless on, monitor on at 30%)

quirks:
1) bizarre way of changing monitor brightness
2) suspend to RAM and suspend to disk work after modification of BIOS settings. You can also make it work after disabling hires and nohz but this is counter intuitive as whole point is to keep battery running long. This seems to be due to issues with kernel and intel video driver.

Sound is very good, but internal speakers pretty weak so either use headphones or external speakers.

In general Toshiba after standard customization is responsive with pretty long battery life. Used mainly as photo traveler companion for first crude picture editing in lightzone.

I considered Asus, Acer, Samsung and Toshiba, first two look pretty crappy and had noted hardware issues, so between Samsung and Toshiba I tossed the coin.

Thanks all.  This is quite encouraging.

broch: Could you give some idea of what changes you made to the kernel and how you modified BIOS settings?  Thanks.

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

I am running a Toshiba NB-305 as well, though I've got roughly 6 hrs of battery life out of it. @broch - Could you describe what you've done? Maybe even write a wiki entry on it? I am extremely interested.

[ Edit:  Wow, I did not read the last post. Sorry broch. ]

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

Kernel is custom and I am building it from sources. I don't use initrd. I can post configs later.

BIOS: go to Advanced tab and change CPU from dynamic to powersave (or something similar). This will make possible to suspend to RAM
I have seen users dealing with suspend to RAM on netbooks by adding nohz=off highres=off but this virtually kills battery. Even without suspend working system is ready in less than 20s so one can live without this for a while (until kernel/intel-video get fixed).

however append to kernel line this:
acpi_osi=Linux

KDE - installed KDEmod so no idea about Arch KDE

these are settings for netbook (each step is reversible):
1) disable Korganizer
/home/michal/kdemod4-old/share/config/korgacrc
set Autostart to false
2) disable knotify4
sudo mv /usr/bin/knotify4 /usr/bin/knotify4_bak
setting nonexecutable bit does not work as knotify4 will be "magically" restored to function

3) kill nepomuk/indexing/destop search completely (two steps)
- disable the above in System Settings
- add script to ~/.kde(mod)4/Autostart with following line
kquitapp NepomukServer

4) disable kwrited

5) disable gpg-agent and ssh-agent
sudo vim /etc/kde/env/agent-startup.sh
comment out everything

6) System settings stuff:
Advanced Tab -> Service Manager:
enabled only
KDED Status Notifier (some programs require this t show nice icon in system trayThis can be disabled but you will get "question mark" icon in some instances)
PowerDevil
Solid Auto-eject service
Removable Device Automounter

I wish to kill KDE Time Zone Daemon, (no neet to run two), but even disabled it starts anyway)
System settings -> General tab -> Desktop effects disabled
System settings -> General tab -> Notifications disabled

PowerDevil settings for battery: IMPORTANT!
make sure that CPU frequency scaling policy is set to Dynamic (ondemand)
it uses less power than Powersave
however set:
System powersaving scheme: Powersave

Toshiba monitor brightness:
set to 30%
this is pretty important as LCD may take a lot of power.

extras:
modify ondemand scheduler so it jumps into higher frequency at 98% (this will not slow down system)
su -c 'echo 98 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold'
note: per cpu modification does not work anymore.
to make it permanent edit rc.local:
echo 98 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold

force USB autosuspend
tweak file system (I never used default Arch settings for fs, but I doubt that these are optimized for battery), include: sysctl, fstab.

setting steps listed above will take ~1hr total

for desktop speed
tweak udev, rc.sysinit, inittab, rc.conf (eg only daemons I have listed are syslog-ng, hal, laptop-mode)
customize kernel (default kernel must accommodate a lot of hardware so by nature is slower)

For Toshiba I can post my configs if needed

modify syslog-ng so it will not access disk to often when on battery)

now disconnect power, restart Toshiba netbook, open terminal window and run free -m (you should get 76MB), next run powertop, let it settle.
You should see no more than 18/s interrupts and power should be at 6.5W which is close to power consumption under windows 7 (5.6-6W)
boot time from grub to KDM 12-14s
from KDM to desktop ~7-8s (if KDE started from xinitrc you will get to desktop a little faster)

SATA disk power option: system will run fine unless you are planning heavy disk bound activities (no pacman -Syu, no copying large files, no compiling): web, document editing are not much affected. This is reversible:
for powersave
su -c 'echo min_power > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy'
reverse to full performance
su -c 'echo max_performance > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy'

@JavaAtom
I am too lazy for wiki, maybe try this, if you will get above results then maybe create Toshiba 305 wiki entry

hope this will help

by the way, I did not upgrade to Xorg 1.8 and will leave this for some time as it seems a little troublesome.

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

@broch
I will queue up a wiki page with more generic directions. Maybe write a script or two to adjust things like the SATA disk power settings?

[ No offense intended, I just don't use KDE. :-) ]

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

@broch
I am hunting through the wiki for information on how to adjust syslog-ng and do the other things you've suggested.  Right now, I'm making the attempt to rebuild the kernel.
-------------------
Update:
Attempted to rebuild the kernel, modified the syslog-ng write times / caching, cpu frequency scaling, etc.  However, I'm still using between 9.2 and 10w.  Am I just plain stupid? neutral

hmm..
I don't know specifics of your setup, so what I provided is general information.
If you have something else running that eats power, I don't know. Some of this you will have to figure out yourself. These is too mny things that may be different between your setup and mine.

this is output of powertop -d:

@Broch I'm setting up on  Nb305-410 as well and am wondering what video driver you're using.

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

@nwillet -- It's probably the intel-video driver.  I don't think there's a unique driver for the GMA 3100HD chipset.

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

Since other's might be interested, here's what I can report about Arch on the Toshiba NB305-410...
The Basics:
I'm dual booting Arch and Windows 7 Starter. Arch is running the default install kernel (2.6.34-ARCH), xorg 1.8, and a basic Gnome setup.
As JavaAtom suggests above, I'm using the intel-video driver and it works flawlessly.
Wireless networking is handled by network-manager.

The Good:
Once booted, everything runs snappily in Gnome, even with Metacity compositing enabled. I have had dropbox, nautilus, gnome-do (as docky), chromium with 7-8 tabs, gedit with 2-3 tabs, and 2 terminals all open at once and no slowdown whatsoever. Not surprisingly, this is a huge improvement over Windows 7 performance.
Network card works fine and I'm using network-manager right now with no problems. Contemplating switching to WICD or netcfg as I'm having minor problems with dropbox and network-manager playing nice together.
Webcam works perfectly in Cheese. Also seems to work with skype.
Suspend works provided you follow Broch's suggestion above: Under BIOS, change "Dynamic CPU Frequency Mode"  from "Dynamic Switch" to "Always Low." After that, suspend should work.
Sound works fine under ALSA. As expected, built in speakers are weak but sound quality is great in head phones. Initially, had some problems configuring ALSA but running alsaconf seems to have fixed them.

The Bad:
Microphone is not working with Skype or Audacity. Hopeful that this can be fixed though.
Hibernate does not work as far as I can tell. Not really a big deal for me since I never use it anyway.
As Broch details below, screen brightness can be adjusted while in Grub by using the regular fn +f6/f7 keyboard shortcut. Ideally, there would be some way to do this from within Arch. Gnome screen brightness applet definitely does not work however.

The Ugly:
Battery life is not great (~8.5 hours, I get 10-11 under Windows 7). This is with laptop-mode-tools installed and screen brightness at ~30%. Powertop is reporting powerusage as 8.5 watts.
Boot time is longish. 40 seconds from pressing the power button to GDM. An additional 15 seconds from GDM login to a fully working Gnome desktop. I've decided not to take the time to improve this since I use suspend most of the time anyway. However, Broch demonstrates that this can be reduced to ~20 seconds if you're willing to take the time to work on it.

I will update this post as I fix/improve things...

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

toshiba nb305-n410 brightness adjustment:

there is only one way for now: keyboard adjustment works at grub:
stop booting at grub (move cursor kernel selection up and down so timer will stop)
use default Fn - F6/F7 keys to adjust brightness.
Once adjusted brightness settings will be preserved between system boot

Power saving features: never got beyond 9.5hr (with monitor on)
major problems: USB generic, ath9k, some "stupid" kernel interrupts

@nwillet
your boot time can be easily fixed from grub to gdm: kernel (maybe see my config for some pointers though I am not saying that this can't be improved), rc.sysinit, inittab, rc.conf  - these are mostly listed here at Arch forums.

No idea about Gnome. I got KDE trimmed down to 76MB so not much to load between KDM and desktop (~8s). Some so called powersaving features do the opposite increasing power consumption most can be monitored with powertop.

currently very disappointed with xorg and trying to find sane solution. I seriously doubt that anyone will fix suspend-to-RAM for default dynamic cpu settings in BIOS. Suspend-to-disk worked but after "revolutionary" changes to X this is now quite unreliable (on all netbooks with intel video, though for some this works)
When suspend-to-disk works is quite fast (~5s) so even if suspend to RAM will never get fixed this is/will be an option.

hope this will help

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

@Broch Thanks for the tip on switching brightness while in Grub. It's a viable workaround for the moment. I'm looking into the possibility of using toshset to adjust screen brightness from within arch though I have no idea yet if that will work.

Right now, though, my biggest concern remains battery life and power usage. Posting my powertop -d output just on the off chance that someone has some advice for improving it. What alarms me the most about the powertop output is that I'm spending so much time in c-state 1. The CPU is never reaching a higher c-state. I'm also concerned about USB2.0-CRW. As far as I know I'm using none of my USB ports so what is this and why is it active 100% of the time.

Re: Latest netbooks, specifically Atom N450 support

In the second reply in this thread about Arch Linux on the Samsung N220 netbook the hyper-links don't work any more but user Meyithi has kindly provided his rc.local by email and given me permission to share it here:

Meyithi wrote:

Those settings are quite conservative, I didn't want to sacrifice too much performance as it's a netbook after all.

I should also refer you to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Samsung_N150, the backlight script on that page works with the N220 and also works for my current netbook, you can set an initial backlight level in rc.local with:

setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=77

which will set an initial level of 50%, you can refer to lspci if you want to double check the bus (00:02.0) number against your gma3150.  You can also checkout https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p1073885 which is a rundown of my current netbook, much will be applicable to the N220.
