linux-firmware update and eth0 does not exist (e1000e probe failure)

Ok so, since the last update, I boot back up and my internet stops working; it seems that eth0 somehow disappeared. I only seem to have lo and wlan0 in an ifconfig -a.

This is a pretty big problem for me, because well, if I have no internet, I can't go on the internet to try and solve the problem. (Right now I'm borrowing my sister's computer.)

So first I want to find out how to downgrade this safely so I can use internet on my computer, which would help a lot. I forgot all the packages it replaced, but if I -Rd it and then -U the old kernel26-firmware will I be alright? I'm a bit hesitant to do this because the kernel seems to depend on it, and if the machine doesn't want to boot after that, then that'll be much worse than having no internet. Would there be any other packages I should downgrade with it? Should I recompile the kernel when I downgrade? (I forget if the kernel got recompiled or not.)

Of course, I'm always welcome to suggestions to solve the actual problem:

EDIT: Well, I'm not sure since which kernel it was fixed; but I accidentally logged on with the main Arch kernel just now and it works so... yays.

Well, I tried grepping dmesg, and I got different results. It doesn't seem to be complaining about a missing file.

I'm having the same problem.
lspic shows not Ethernet controller.
Luckly, wlan0 works for me.

Well, I'm trying to compile a kernel26-bfs kernel, to see if that works. 'Cause I upgraded kernel to 2.6.34, too.

Sorry, I'm not helping.  Hope there will be a new upgrade to fix this soon.

Well, I was getting tired of having no internet, so I decided to try to downgrade myself. I looked through the pacman logs and carefully downgraded every package from the update. It was a little mess with dependencies, and I had to use ARM to find a few old packages, but it all worked out in the end.

As for what dmesg is supposed to say:

Hmm, doesn't give much hints.

EDIT: Hmm, googling about this suggests that it is a common problem with the BIOS.

Not sure if updating the BIOS would help here, but even if it would, I'm not sure how to update the BIOS. I don't have Windows on my machine anymore, and it'll be a pretty big pain to install it. //EDIT: According to Toshiba I already have the latest BIOS version for my laptop so...

EDIT2: Alright, I temporarily solved the problem by using the kernel26-lts. I'm not going to mark this thread solved because I'm essentially downgrading though. Hopefully it'll be fixed in .36 (they were talking about some patch being applied in the above mails), but I can't keep my hopes up too much.

After the update of last night (glic,man-pages,nvidia-utils,nvidia,smbclient,samba, and kernel26-bfs), and switch to Windows for a while, I found eth0 back!
I really don't know which did the trick. I guess it's glic, most likely.

I got the same update and I still have the problem.

I guess it got fixed for you because kernel26-bfs is newer than the Arch kernel in core and the bug got fixed upstream.

No, I don't think so. I just installed it, no using it.
Maybe we have different causes.
Our devices are different, and I don't have e1000e probe failure.

I had the same problem, I solved it replacing the module e1000e in 2.6.34 by an older one (from 2.6.33.6). I don't know if this was the correct/polite/aproved-by-the-gurus way to do it, but it worked for me. You will need to get the linux source code and compile it for yourself. The steps:

- Get the sources for the versions 2.6.34 and 2.6.33.6

- Compile linux-2.6.34

make menuconfig
make

- Untar linux-2.6.33.6 and cd to dir drivers/net/e1000e

- compile this module with 2.6.34:

make -C path_to_linux_2_6_34 M=`pwd` modules

- replace the current module for the new one:

modprobe -r e1000e
mv /lib/modules/2.6.34/kernel/drivers/net/e1000e/e1000e.ko ~/e1000e.ko.bak
cp e1000e.ko /lib/modules/2.6.34/kernel/drivers/net/e1000e/e1000e.ko
depmod 2.6.34
modprobe e1000e

and see whether your network interface is there.

I contacted the e1000e developers and they've been able to reproduce my issue. They said that they will fix it in the next versions. Meanwhile they suggested to use e1000e standalone module versions 0.5.11.2 or earlier from http://sourceforge.net/projects/e1000/files/

If you have similar issues please refer to http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.ph … tid=447449

If you have a different chipset than 82573L (use lspci -v to check what chipset you have) you might want to report the following command outputs to the bug linked above: lspci -vvv , uname -a , ethtool -e (from a working kernel).

I've run into similar problems with e1000e. Every now and then, it wouldn't recognize my NIC. A workaround was to reload the driver (modprobe -r e1000e; modprobe e1000e). This didn't always happen though.

ifconfig shows eth0 is up but it does not function. Tried shutting down and bringing up eth0 with:

# ifconfig eth0 down
# ifconfig eth0 up

to no avail. The above commands run without error but there is no internet access through eth0. Also tried runnig:

# dhcpd eth0

but just got repeated messages of "renewing lease <ip>" and "carrier lost" until I terminated the command with Ctrl-C. People appear to be having issues with e1000e on 2.6.35 kernels over at the gentoo forums as well:

Per the gentoo forums, the issue appears to be a problem with dhcpd.
