hi everyon,
Two days ago, I had to re-install Arch on my VaioP when it got un-bootable. I used an USB stick to install and updated to the latest release. Then I noticed that an USB stick and an SD card do not show up. (fdisk -l only shows only an SDD). Hal is in a DAEMON array in /etc/rc.conf and is running. I don't know where to look.. Does anyone have any suggestions / directions about how to fix this issue?
thanks

I just got a very similar problem:
I get the same kind of output as nao from dmesg, and tail -f /var/log/everything.log shows absolutely nothing happening whenever I plug something into the USB ports...
$ lsmod | grep -i usb
usbcore .... 3 uhci_hcd, ehci_hcd
$ lsusb
Lists three USB 1.1 root hubs
Any ideas what might cause this? I do not use HAL, only udev and newest Xorg (1.8), and it worked up until today..
Using a live Debian CD, the USB ports work just fine...

After doing a bit more digging, it seems there is an error related to ehci_hcd which initializes the USB ports:
ehci_hcd: USB 2.0 'ENhanced' Host Controlled (EHCI) Driver

Don't know exactly what to make of this, but will keep digging..

Seems like a similar problem to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/254589
rmmod ehci_hcd
does *not* seem to do the trick as proposed some places...
Anyone got any thoughts on this?

*Bump*
Anyone know what might be causing USB 2.0 to act up like this?
It has to be a software issue considering it works just fine when running GParted live..?

I just found out that if I shutdown the system with an USB in and boot it again, the USB is detected. Once I pull it out, it's gone. What does it mean? There is no luck with an SD card.
Any idea, Jonhoo?

what about the modules sdhci and sdhci_pci?
without knowing what hardwre you have and what modules you have loaded, how are we supposed to help you? .)

Oh, of course, sorry about that.
I have a Sony Vaio X-13 laptop with fully updated Arch. Below are outputs from relevant commands

Haven't been able to try out rebooting with the USB in,...
nao: Do you also get the same messages about ehci_hcd
Yes, I do. Does your Vaio detect an SD card? Mine comes with an SD an a HG Duo slots. Both of them are undetected.

Mine has a card reader as well, but do not have a card to test with unfortunately..

*Bump*
Sorry, but have anyone got a clue what might be causing this?
Even just a pointer to where I might look to figure it out?

I've had no luck so far, and running out of options and have no idea which direction to look for. At one time, I was wondering to do the whole installation again.
Given up on the kernel26-base installed on mine, I just installed kernel26-lts. Now, all my external storage (USB, SD, HG Duo) are detected. This may not be an exact solution to the problem but at least I can get the working VAIO back.

I'm planning a reinstall in not to long anyway to align my partitions with the SSD erase block size to improve performance.
Will report back if it starts working..

After a full reinstall, everything worked fine.
After an update of kernel26 to 2.6.34 (from 2.6.33), Hi-Speed USB stopped working (and so did my wireless card)
A downgrade fixed the problem, but seems to be a problem with the 2.6.34 kernel?

Thanks for your report. So, it seems this problem is related to the kernel 2.6.34 but I can't help wondering why we are the only ones with this problem.
At lease, I'm glad it's not the h/w problem.

No-one else with this problem, or with a possible solution?

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but figured I'd post the solution I've found:
From this post over at the Ubuntu forums: http://newyork.ubuntuforums.org/showthr … ost9969379
Solution: by adding memmap=1K#0x7f800000 to your grub config, update grub and reboot. everything work again!
