Hi,
i run the old intel xf86-video-intel 2.9 on my beloved Vaio R600 HFP with a intel 830m / 82830M graphics chipset.
KMS is switched off by i915.modeset=0.
Now with the kernel 2.6.34 and KMS switched on, i get a console, but when X is started i get a dark screen without a mouse.
Anyone got this graphic chip running with xorg 1.8?
Thanks.

When you upgraded the kernel and video card driver, did you upgrade xorg at the same time? If so, then maybe it's an xorg issue and not an issue with your particular video card.
Note there have been some changes with xorg 1.8. Namely, configuration files using hal are now ignored. udev is used instead. See http://www.archlinux.org/news/502/ for info.

The old intel 2.9 driver does not support Xorg 1.8. If you want to use the old intel driver you have to downgrade the Xorg-server and its dependencies.

Hmm good to know. Thanks for posting this.

I've been trying the 2.12 driver with xorg 1.8 and it does work on the i830. The problems are that I need to ctrl-alt-F1 alt-F7 to get the screen correct and that suspend simply locks the machine. Also, disable sleep as that also locks the machine.

Hi,
still doesn't work for me, but this sounds good:

Hope this will bring my graphics back ...
