X to console

Hi I am running the latest kernel and xorg, I have an ati 5650 moble. My problem is I cannot switch from X to a console, I can switch between consoles before X is started but one started everytime I try to switch I just get a blinking cursor in the top left of my screen and darkness I can however switch back to X on console 7. Further more killing X results in me having to hard reboot my computer. I don't know if this has anything to do with this but vlc will not play correctly in framebuffer either.

I am also getting a weird vlc error, I'm torrenting some movies (legally) when I open them in vlc on accosion my screen goes fuzzy and I need to shutdown my computer.

switched drivers now it's fine
