This FLAC audio in OpenShot and Kdenlive isn't working right for me

In OpenShot, I imported a FLAC audio file and a JPEG image to act as frames. I previewed the project, and the image got distorted and the audio was all kinds of messed up. (It plays fine in VLC and mplayer though...)

Then I put 'em in Kdenlive, and the audio still wasn't playing right. It kept zooming through the project at an overly high speed for some reason. (I think it was doing this in OpenShot too.) I tried disabling something like "play real time (skips frames)" but then there was no sound at all. Though it did seem like the proper speed this time, watching the progress line....

What the heck is going on here.

kdenlive and openshot both use mlt as backend, so this might be the right place to search for the problem.

Thanks for the info. That led me to this, which may be the same or a related problem:

Decided to just use ffmpeg to make wav files from the FLACs for editing.
