xf86 and xorg issues during upgrade SOLVED

Hi All
its been discussed already about problems with the new xorg-server and nvidia.
but i was wondering if all would be good if I did the upgrade while ignoring xorg updates....

I have tried this already and get the following

xf86-input-evdev and xorg-server are in conflict (xorg-server<1.8.0). Remove xorg-server? [y/N]

so I assume that xf86-input-evdev needs the new xorg-server 1.8..... because I get the above error even though
xorg is ignored in pacman.conf

do you think it is safe to ignore xf86 packages AND xorg and THEN do the entire upgrade???

I have added the following to pacman.conf so far

IgnorePkg = xorg-server xf86-input-evdev xf86-video-vesa

done a pacman -Syy
and a pacman -Syu  without commiting the changes, and it doesn't complain about anything....

can I have confirmation that it shouldn't cause breakages while still upgrading nvidia and the kernel..........
any idea???

Not an nvidia user myself, but others have posted about success with nvidia and xorg 1.8. What problems have already been discussed, and where?

Apart from that, if you're going to ignore xorg-server updates, you also need to ignore updates for all other xorg-related packages.

What card do you have? g105m here, and the update has gone through seamlessly. I would not start ignoring all xorg related packages, way to messy wink

Re: xf86 and xorg issues during upgrade SOLVED

so what?

Nvidia-173xx and -96xx drivers currently don't support the new Xorg release. We recommend using the xf86-video-nouveau driver package for now.

my understanding is these drivers will be updated, but until then you can use nouveau. you might as well just wait with the whole update until this happens.

I am using Nvidia 7800 GTX

I'm doing an upgrade now and ignoring the xorg, xf86 packages etc  that I mentioned.....
I don't see the harm upgrading everything except xorg, I doubt it will break... but I will report back.

I have not seen official confirmation that the nvidia drivers are compiled and tested thoroughly against the new xorg yet... so i think its
the sensible thing to do...... in saying this.. my fingers are crossed. lol

i'll let you know how i go

Re: xf86 and xorg issues during upgrade SOLVED

xorg 1.8 has been working fine for me since I updated (almost 3 days) and I am using the ndivia-173xxx driver. All you need to do is use the -ignoreABI option when launching xorg (by editing kdmrc in my case, a KDE user).

The only *problem* I had during the update was that the newest kernel wouldn't upgrade because of the nvidia driver. The solution was to create a package for the kernel26-34.x.x.x kernel. I did so by using:

1) The newest nvidia drivers' PKGBUILD (non 96xxx and 173xxx): http://repos.archlinux.org/wsvn/packages/nvidia/trunk
+
2) The URL/md5sum in this AUR package http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidi … l/PKGBUILD

I'll keep that in mind just incase.....
although im not keen on compiling nvidia from AUR..... its my last resort if i have to smile
