nouveau driver kills pro audio performance

Just a FYI:
after the xorg 1.8 upgrade, and the associated replacement of nvidia-173xx by xf86-video-nouveau,
pro audio performance is broken. midi playback is very stuttery, fluidsynth now even plays some incorrect sounds (?) and in general many jack xruns.

This has come up before, nouveau is currently unfriendly towards audio performance. The problem is that upstream doesn't have pro-audio testers, though there is at least one dev who expressed an interest to solving it, with sufficient testing volunteers. This was communicated on the LAU list (if I recall correctly) but I didn't see much takeup.
