gnome update broke volume control, bkgd setting, etc.

on my lenovo laptop (runs arch-64) things like the volume up/down buttons used to work, and i used to have a wallpaper background with my openbox desktops.  after the latest gnome update now all of these things are broken.  i also can't adjust the system alert volume via the gnome control center.  does anyone know if these are common issues that will probably be solved soon in a future update, or whether i should start digging and hacking?

It's pick and shovel time.  Lenovo Edge-14 here, Arch 64 and fully upgraded Gnome 3.2.  Volume key, brightness keys work as expected with the OSD icons.

what do you mean "fully updated?"

i don't want to bloat my system, but i'm busy right now and would rather do as you've done than hunt them down, if it will fix these issues.
