Hello all, i'm Alex from the OpenOctaveProject.
In the process of encouraging packagers to get our latest release, OOMidi-2011, out to users, the Arch-AUR team were well ahead of the rest, as we've come to expect. ![]()
I'm writing to ask if we can use the Arch logo on our wiki, as a visual identification to our Arch users that there is an OOMidi-2011 package available to them.
Once again, well done and thank you to the Arch packagers, from the OpenOctave team.
You fellas are sharp. ![]()
Alex.

tl;dr: you'll want to email trademarks@archlinux.org to ask for permission. You won't get the attention of the right individual(s) here on the forums, and it's better to have the back and forth email in case there's ever any question about permission in the future.

Hey Alex,
OOmidi is coming along great, no problems getting the new version running over here.
It will be exciting to see the FST / VST support emerge, although, i currently have those features disabled. For now, running them externally works fine, especially if using OOStudio ![]()
anyways, I just wanted to mention my appreciation for this project, it's starting to mature and be very useable.... I've been loosely following oomidi since it was still tied to KDE in dependencies...
take care and keep up the good work.
ninez
PS: do you need testers for the FST support? i own many VSTi's (about 20 commercial VST, N.I Komplete and a bunch of Linplug plugins) and I could probably do some testing/reporting, if you are interested?

We've certainly been getting on with it (we're all toasted at the moment), and OOMidi-2011 is shaping up nicely. There's a couple of further refinements we're doing at the moment as a result of great feedback from users, but i'm absolutely sure the Arch-AUR packaging specialists will be all over a package update within hours. ![]()
We had a discussion at OpenOctave not that long ago about FST/VST. It's not on our roadmap for improvement internally at the moment, for OOMidi-2012, but we haven't discounted the possibility. We have a selection of powerful new features that we think are important to add first, for users, and we're currently working on design for those features, so FST/VST isn't in the near future at least, but is noted.
If or when an FST/VST structure is developed further, we'd certainly appreciate you helping out with testing!
I'm really pleased you're enjoying OOStudio. That's bit of a labour of love for all the team, as a means of managing big sessions, including multiple apps, from an automatic administrative perspective was really high on our agenda.
Entirely inhouse designed and built by one of our team, we're pleased how well it turned out. You can expect more to be included in OOStudio, as we work to adding more features based on a single "select and start" process for users. It starts my big orchestral sessions without a glitch, and by the time the kettle's boiled, and i'm armed with a cup of tea, i can sit down and write, with no further admin involved.
At the moment, OOMidi will accept Ladspa and LV2 effects plugins, so there is an opportunity to apply effects to your Masterpiece. ![]()
Once we've had a bit of a breather, we'll start on the roadmap, and release at stages along that roadmap between now and somewhere near June 2012.
When we've finalized the roadmap we're going to publish it on the website, so all users, and interested developers, can see what we've planned, and if they want to, jump in and help, if a particular feature is something they want to contribute to.
Great to hear you're up and running!
Thanks for the support and encouragement, it's appreciated, and inspires us to push on. ![]()
Regards,
Alex.

that's cool, like i said, as of now i just manage my VSTi's externally using OOstudio. I've wrapped my FST/VSTs with 'aliases', so they can each be executed with a short command (instead of using wine env variables for rt-wine and typing all of the paths, manually). that way i don't have to type anything but the vsti name into oostudio (or terminal). So far it has been working without issue.
OOStudio is a nice session management alternative to using a tool like Ladish, or even in my opinion better than Jack Session, for my purposes anyway..Ladish can handle managing Windows VSTs, but i find it's a hassle and i'd rather not use it, while jack session has it's own limitations.
You guys should keep FST/VST on the radar. There are lots of high quality commercial VSTi's that run smoothly in Wine, and are stable to use in projects. Most of mine run without any grief, either with FST, or using SAVIhost (a single vstplugin host for windows that uses WineASIO).

My use of OOmidi is recent, although i have been checking in the your project for a long time, but yes i am really enjoying it. I find the workflow reminds me of using Logic 9 in MacOSX. ~ that would be the closest comparison in DAWs. You're implementation of midi seems very good, and the piano-roll is very nice. Very fully featured. flexible.
At the moment, OOMidi will accept Ladspa and LV2 effects plugins, so there is an opportunity to apply effects to your Masterpiece.
...that is, if one doesn't consider that they can also bus in external effects or the like. I've bounced some tracks, using my Abbey roads plugins (external FST/VST fx chain). I haven't finished any project yet in OOmidi, but when i am ready to do some mastering, i also plan to use some plugins externally. So i think they are lots of possibilities and lack of limitations, thus far.
some powerful sample editing would be nice, but it isn't a huge inconvience. Data loss prevention / recovery would also be killer, although i haven't run into this problem yet. For me, there isn't much complaints though. I think OOmidi is the best "all-in-one" DAW solution for linux so far.

sounds good.

No problem, i saw this post and thought i should take the opportunity ![]()

TSN,
I've been thinking about your setup with OOStudio, with aliases for wine VSTs, etc, and i'm impressed by it. We've had other users asking us about VST with Wine, and similar topics, and i ask, would you consider putting together a text document or something like that, describing the setup, to add to a new page in our wiki describing user setups?
If you're willing, my email is alexstone at openoctave dot org,
or IRC #openoctave (freenode)
Thanks,
Alex.

My involment with music so far has been only upto listening.
Its time to grab that AUR package and try something.

...I'll need to sit down, and map out what a guide will entail / also find some time to do so. But i'd love to contribute, I'm not a very good programmer, so that counts out me writing code to contribute ~ but i can probably handle writing this guide. The 'alias' solution was inspired by the 'aliases' thread here in the arch linux forums;
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64607
You see, While Festige is great for managing/executing VSTs, it doesn't help when you are working on actual projects / sessions. (Unless you are going to launch VSTs 1st, but that will no doubt lead to other problems, depending)... That's (to a large degree) why Ladish exists and one area where it is really useful, ie: jack-session doesn't handle VST/wine only native clients that support Jack Session, which makes it essentially useless for me (or anyone using even native apps, that don't support it).
So after toying around for a while, i came up with the alias idea for FST/VSTi, which seems to be a decent solution, as an added bonus, it also allows you to have proper launchers for your VSTs (ie: in gnome-menu i have a VST menu).
If you're willing, my email is alexstone at openoctave dot org,
or IRC #openoctave (freenode)
we'll be in touch, i just added you to my gmail contacts. Let me think a little about how i might like to lay out a tutorial, and i'll get in touch in the next couple of days ~ I'm at work right now, and have band practice tonight, so it probably won't happen until the weekend some time.
talk soon

We've identified and fixed a couple of bugs with audio in OOMidi-2011, as a result of great feedback from users.
I ask if the packaging specialists could grab the most recent source code.
Thanks,
Alex.
