I'd like to ask you. How many packages offers ARCHLinux for users ?
Thank.

Re: Numbers of packages

Hmm, Debian has aroun 10 000. It's a quite a good difference.

Re: Numbers of packages

That's hard to answer.

There are about 300 in [current] and maybe 2000 in [extra] (These are extremely rough estimates, give or take 25%). Those are the official packages.

Then there's about 150 in the more or less official [community], as well as maybe 800 PKGBUILDs in the unofficial unsupported packages.

Finally, you can easily create a package for any linux program using makepkg, so there are pretty much no limits on the number of packages available.

There always seems to be a response like this... but tell me, do you have all 10000 installed? If so, how big is your hard drive? If not, then how many do you have installed.  I currently have about 120-150 packages installed on a system that's been running arch for a year or so (desktop) and less than that on my server.

150 is a far cry from 2000 and even farther still from 10000.  This is a non-issue... you find a package that you need and can't find, and I'll package it in 5 minutes for you.

Re: Numbers of packages

Sure, I have never tried more than 500 - 1000 packages. I just hope that I will find here packages that I'll really need.

Re: Numbers of packages

Dibble has a really powerful PKGBUILD for making custom kernels in the wiki.

Re: Numbers of packages

you can easily build your own packages with makepkg, not to mention users have new PKGBUILDS (file used to build the package in makepkg) everyday.
