Hi all, I can't print to network printers anymore. I did an overhaul wheni upgraded to gnome 3.2 because of video driver problems and now I can't search for network printers. When i try to add them in gnome 3.2 I get the following message when i tell it to search for network printers:
"FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-client and samba-client enabled on firewall."
I haven't enabled any firewall in particular on my computer. If FirewallD (whatever it is) "isn't running," then (1) why do i need to enable services that should not be blocked, and (2) how do i unblock these services??

I suspect you may not have those services installed. Particularly, you might not have the avahi daemon running: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Avahi .

i had the avahi-daemon running. I went to the page and ran the pacman command just in case. I've since restarted and manually stopped and started the avahi daemon--no luck.
where might one find these services?
I've tried everything i can think of. i'm totally lost on this one.

Looks like this is the patch which added that message, and the firewalld support: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/commits- … 09761.html . The patch claims that the warning message will be displayed if you don't have 'firewalld', and will stick around if it can't find any printers after searching.
Do you need autodiscovery of printers, or is this just a once off configuration? If it's the latter, then you might try autodetecting the printer in some other gnome3 environment (e.g. Fedora 15), noting the configuration and then adding it manually in Arch.

I suppose I could load up a VM of fedora or something. I have a USB printer attached to my ubuntu server that I use as a network printer. I can access it fine from two other windows computers on my network, and i used to be able to access it before the upgrade to gnome 3.2. I had lots of troubles, so I tried completely uninstalling the GUI and xorg and everything to start from scratch. There were a lot of dependent programs that I had to uninstall in the meantime, but I made sure i have hplip and cups going. I can mount smb shares using mount -t cifs, but I can't do network discovery in nautilus either. I don't know what I uninstalled that didn't get reinstalled when i reinstalled gnome and its dependencies...
I've never heard of FirewallD, and I've tried looking for it but it doesn't look like exists--at least not natively in arch or any of its repositories. Oh, and I thought that programs like samba and cupsd and such would automatically listen on opened ports when they got installed. what should I install/configure in order to use ipp when printing to strictly network printers (not USB printers shared over a network). i've googled it and looked though forum threads and I can't find a solution. I need it to print at work from my laptop.

It might be worth getting Fedora in a VM, just to prove that you've still got everything working.
To get smb shares working, it looks like you need the gvfs-smb and gnome-vfs packages. I gather you're sharing your printer via IPP both at home and work though? Can you manually add the printers via the gnome or CUPS interfaces? Does cups printer discovery work?

I got a Fedora VM going and checked to see if the problem was there. I got the same message. It shows that message if it can't find the printer through the network. I never saw that before, though. When i tried to add a network printer in Gnome 3.0 it came up just fine in the list there in the GUI.
I was successful in adding the printer through the CUPS web interface. I've never had to do that before on any linux system I've set up (several). So my problem has been fixed, i guess. I can add my printers (through the web interface) but my printers dialogue in the system settings is useless. Marking this as solved. for now, anyway.

I guess that means something has changed in your home network/printer setup, or maybe something on your arch box is blocking the discovery (a firewall of some description). If you boot Fedora off a live CD or USB you can eliminate the arch firewall possibility.
Do you have any physical boxes with the 'other' OSes on them (Windows/Mac/BSD etc.), and can those auto-discover it?

the only thing that changed was gnome. i have 3 other machines running windows, and they all discover it fine. the printer is being shared by a server running ubuntu. only my arch partition on my laptop doesn't discover.
