[SOLVED] Firefox claims gecko-mediaplayer is not installed, but it IS.

I've tried downgrading each of these as well as firefox and gecko-mediaplayer to no avail. I've also done quite a bit of searching without finding anything helpful. Any ideas are most welcome.

Okay, I've had a bit of a breakthough. I tried to load an mkv file and to my shock discovered that it actually worked just fine. So I went back and checked the firefox about:plugins page.

gecko-mediaplayer is listed as installed but there is no avi listed in the MIME Types! So I went to the Applications section of the Preferences dialog, where you can map Content Type to Action, and sure enough AVI file wasn't mapped to anything while other types of media were to "Use mplayerplug-in is now gecko-mediaplayer".

Here is the current issue. The drop down Action menu for AVI file doesn't list gecko-mediaplayer as an option! All the other media types are set to it automatically, but avi somehow got unset.

I've been messing a bit with the mimeTypes.rdf file in my firefox profile folder, but so far I've been having trouble making heads or tails of it.

As always, any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Okay, I've managed to get quite a bit further and the problem has shifted on me once again. This will be my last post tonight.

By working off the knowledge in the above-mentioned links, I have narrowed down the source of the problem considerably. I have run firefox as root and found that gecko-mediaplayer gets loaded properly. I have created a new profile and found that doesn't fix anything. I now know the problem lies somewhere in my home directory, but not in my .mozilla folder.

The post for October 07, 2011 talks about the same basic issue which he solved by running a trace. I will install http://lttng.org/tutorial/lttnglttv if I have to, but... perhaps there's a less crazy solution?

I lied and I'm sorry for that, but I've solved the problem! It was one of the two "dconf" folders or the "user" files they contained. One was in .cache and the other was in .config and I trashed them both. I figured it out by checking the dependencies of gnome-mplayer then checking the home folder for associated files.
