I have finally got my system fully updated and using 3.0-ARCH. My problem is as follows :
When I use anything XFCE4 with a scrollbar, the window contents become "blocky" in that I can only see big black bars. Maximising the window removes the problem until the next scroll. This happens in Thunar and in Settings when I am choosing a style in appearance.
I have tried with and without an xorg.conf.
The problem does not occur in Firefox or Libreoffice. It happens in gnome-shell with Nautilus too.
This does not happen with kernel 2.6.37.5 but I had to update becasue my system and headers were getting into a mess -- Virtualbox stopped working.
I have tried both xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-ati-svn and have the same problems.
I am really unsure as to what to do next.
Please advise.
edit to add information:
I have just discovered that this issue does not occur if I use the window scroll bar. It happens when I use the mouse wheel. I will test with another mouse.

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them.
