microphone does not work with Skype on Gnome 3

This is on an updated system running on an Asus EEE 1005HA netbook.
The sound output works fine, but the microphone does not.
It must be some problem with Skype/GNOME3 integration as gnome-sound-recorder records my voice without any problems.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: microphone does not work with Skype on Gnome 3

In pavucontrol, on the "Recording" tab, I noticed that my input source was wrong (while the Skype test call was running). It was set to "Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo". I changed it to the correct source ("Webcam C200 Analog Mono" in my case) and it worked.

Hope that helps.

Re: microphone does not work with Skype on Gnome 3

It is set corrrectly here.

What is frustrating is that gnome-sound-recorder works like a charm - while almost everything else fails.
Running arecord from the command line as well records nothing.

Re: microphone does not work with Skype on Gnome 3

Are you on 64-bit? If so, is lib32-libpulse installed?
Is pulseaudio-alsa installed?
Is there a ~/.asoundrc?
Does "pacman -Qii libpulse pulseaudio pulseaudio-alsa | grep MODIFIED" only show unmodified files?
Are you sure the recording source is set correctly?
Please paste the output of "fuser -av /dev/snd/*" and "pacmd list" while a Skype test call is running.

Re: microphone does not work with Skype on Gnome 3

I am on 32-bit, pacman -Qii .. shows everything as unmodified. pulseaudio-alsa is installed and there is no .asoundrc
Where does one set the recording source? If I'm using Skype with pulse, input, output are all set to pulse and there are no other options.

output of fuser -av /dev/snd/*
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/by-path:
/dev/snd/controlC0:  abhidg     1109 F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/hwC0D0:
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c:   abhidg     1109 F...m pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:   abhidg     1109 F...m pulseaudio
/dev/snd/seq:
/dev/snd/timer:

pacmd list output is at http://pastebin.com/JZHw2Mux

I could try to see if skype works w/o pulse, as that has worked in the past, but now Gnome is so heavily tied with pulse that attempting pacman -Rcs pulseaudio tries to remove gdm sad

btw the same problem is there in Ekiga as well. Only gnome-sound-recorder works, for some reason.

Re: microphone does not work with Skype on Gnome 3

Just checked by turning off autospawn in ~/.pulse/client.conf and killing pulseaudio -- Skype then works. Of course, volume control and pretty much everything else is disabled as the gnome volume control uses pulse.

So I guess this is a problem with the way pulseaudio interacts with the microphone.

Edit: It seems only recording in CD mode works (so arecord -f cd -d 5 test-mic.wav works), also in gnome-sound-recorder recording using CD type works but when I select voice, it does not.

I tried changing the sample rate in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf as suggested in the wiki but that did not change anything.

Install pavucontrol. Try changing the port in the Input Devices tab.

Re: microphone does not work with Skype on Gnome 3

Changed Input Devices from Analog Input to Microphone, did not work in either case.

When I tap the microphone it detects /something/ as the sound meter jumps, but it can't record voice.

Recording in g-s-r or using CD mode works.
