mr-tux: you've posted about 3 or 4 threads exactly like this - please don't do that.. stick to the same thread.

Through your very verbose posts, I have been able to determine you are having problems configuring X.  This is common.

The easiest thing to do is to run "hwd -x" as Pink Chick suggested, and let it generate an xorg.conf file for you.

Beyond that, you'll need to learn how to configure X for yourself... a simple how-to is here:

You may want to set your video car driver in xorg.conf to "vesa". That always works for me.

I wouldn't do that unless your video card is a very badly supported one. The vesa driver sucks.

The vesa driver does suck, but it will get you into X if video was the problem before.  It makes it one less issue that might be causing the problem.
