I just did full system update including kernel, and after reboot the system boots up only to command line because of course there are no modules anymore. No sound, graphics, network, no nothing.
To add fun to it, I am at work and have still lots of work do to in this machine which is now unusable.
I want to know how to reverse kernel update (if this would help) without internet connection
AND/OR
How to (Re)compile(?) all modules for current kernel which pacman apparently did not see necessary.

I reinstalled linux package and it fixed the problem but it would be nice if regular update procedure did not skip module creation step so often. It's the second time it happened in the last 2 months.

I have not had anything like this happen to me with over two years of using arch on several machines. It seems to be something fairly unique to your setup, maybe a hardware issue? It might be time for a memory check or something similar.
Cheers
You're just jealous because the voices only talk to me.

The only module I have to compile myself is the 'broadcom-wl'-moduls, which is not included in the kernel.
All other modules should be built automatically. Did you see any errors outputted to your screen or to your /var/log/pacman.log ?

How about some log data (pacman.log, dmesg.log)? Without any it is hard to say what went wrong with your updates.

Ok, it happened again, but this time I was watching.
So, what is happening is that during system update run with
terminal -e "yaourt -Syua"
(I am running it from a dock launcher)
mkinitcpio fails with error saying "mkinitcpio does not exist"
However, if after the system upgrade I run "pacman -S linux" all goes well and good.

mkinitcpio fails with error saying "mkinitcpio does not exist"
that is very likely the cause of your problem.
this sounds like a bug in yaourt, better report it to the yaourt maintainers.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky
