Getting thinkpad's special keys to work outside of X server

I'd like to get thinkpad's special keys (volume and power button, sleep and lock keys) to work even when I'm not in X. acpi_listen doesn't detect them.
It is written in ThinkWiki's table of keys that it's possible to detect most of them with thinkpad_acpi, but I have no idea how to read and bind thinkpad_acpi events to actions. Everything I've read so far mentions acpi_listen, but said tool doesn't detect all the keys for me.

Thanks to anyone who will try to help me with this.

EDIT: I've managed to get volume keys working with actkbd. But actkbd doesn't detect power button and Fn+F# combos (lock, sleep, etc.). I would like to use single tool for all special keys, but I can settle for two different tools if there's no other way.
