[Solved] Problem with nvidia 275.09.07-1

I'm running the latest 2.6.39 kernel, nvidia 275.09.07-1, smplayer 0.6.9-3 and mplayer 33159-1.

When I play videos with smplayer fullscreened and wake my mouse pointer, it causes my screen to go blank. The only remedy is to do a hard restart of my system. Also of note is that I'm using VDPAU as my video output.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

EDIT: Upgrading the nvidia package to 285.05.09-1 solves this problem.

I've run into numerous glitches with the 275 driver however VDPAU works as usual. Does plain mplayer work as expected?

Re: [Solved] Problem with nvidia 275.09.07-1

I tried using just mplayer and I can produce the same error. Switched over to the XV video driver and the problem went away. I've never had this problem before the previous 2.6.38 kernel and previous nvidia binary driver.

I did find this gem in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log whenever mplayer crashed:

[ 533.967] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

Not quite sure where to go from here though.

The only fix I found to was to revert back to 2.6.38 and nvidia 270.41.19-1.

Try mplayer2. I have no problems with it.

Re: [Solved] Problem with nvidia 275.09.07-1

Switching to mplayer2 didn't fix the problem and my system still crashes in fullscreen mode.

@hamelg: I'm running a GeForce GT 240.

Re: [Solved] Problem with nvidia 275.09.07-1

I'm having a somewhat similar problem. After running mplayer or youtube in fullscreen and going back to normal mode KDE becoms unresponsive. The mouse pointer does move but I cannot click on anything and the mplayer window is still open, displaying black screen. This happens with mplayer or mplayer2. I'm using the nouveau driver. Thing used to work a couple of days ago, but I cannot tell exactly when this bug happened as I don't watch movies everyday wink

Edit: This does not happen under Gnome so it must be a KDE issue...

I run a dual headed set up and after the crash, I can still move my mouse and use the keyboard. If I try to kill the mplayer process that is running the video, my system becomes unresponsive.

Also, I'm running XFCE 4.8.

The logs don't tell me anything useful.

I have the same setup (dual head, xfce 4.8, nvidia GT 240, nvidia 275.09.07) and the same problem. Did you find any solution? I have to stop using vdpau on mplayer & mythtv to avoid crashing.

Thanks.

Re: [Solved] Problem with nvidia 275.09.07-1

I am experiencing the same issue after upgrading to 275. I've noticed that flash videos and virtual machines seem to cause X to freeze for anywhere between 30 and 180 seconds, before restoring itself and working fine.

I am using a dual video card, four monitor setup with a GTX 295 and GT 430.

Re: [Solved] Problem with nvidia 275.09.07-1

I'm running the nouveau driver and I also experience the same crash with vlc in fullscreen. In my xorg log found this :

[  1383.448] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.
[  1383.448]
Backtrace:

[  1383.448] 3: /usr/bin/X (xf86PostMotionEventP+0x6f) [0x80c4aff]

[  1383.448] 6: /usr/bin/X (0x8048000+0x69a61) [0x80b1a61]

Any ideas ??

Edit : I downgraded the kernel from 2.6.39.3-1 to 2.6.38.7-1 and the problem seems to be gone...

Re: [Solved] Problem with nvidia 275.09.07-1

Having to downgrade multiple packages is hardly the best form of remediation. Anyone try the new nvidia-beta 208.11 from AUR yet? In any case, I'll eventually get around to trying it and reporting my results here.

Re: [Solved] Problem with nvidia 275.09.07-1

I ran into similar issues. I also had problems with snd_hda_intel making my voice high pitched and very fast.

I downgraded to 2.6.38 and that fixed the stability issues, but I took on a bug where terminals would cause the screen to flash when resized (nvidia 270). My final solution was to stay on 2.6.38, remove the nvidia and nvidia-utils packages, and install nvidia-all from the aur. This gave me the 275 driver on the 2.6.38 kernel, and all is well. You guys might give it a shot...

I ended up doing your solution and it works for the most part. I still get random locks when I try fullscreening smplayer while a video is playing.

What I don't get is why the newer nvidia packages after 270 require the kernel to be > 2.6.39.

Re: [Solved] Problem with nvidia 275.09.07-1

I can confirm this bug. GeForce GTX 460, nvidia 280.13-1, xorg-server 1.10.3-2, linux 3.0-2.

EDIT: This happens often with flash playback.

Re: [Solved] Problem with nvidia 275.09.07-1

I am experiencing this problem as well, has there been any progress on this?

I have a post in "newbie corner" about it: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=126361

I haven't had it happen without flash video as far as I can remember. It's fairly common for me, and happens more often if I close a tab that has a flash video running....

Is there some way around using flash? I didn't think flash should be able to crash X... I think X is getting into an infinite loop...
