I've just realized something...
At this exact moment I am running firefox, thunderbird and azureus (which are all known memory hogs) and i'm compiling a kernel and I am not experiencing any slowdown at all! Not even a bit.
I don't think I ever appreciated what my kernel patches do for me until today.
Coincindentally I'm just building kernel26cko [for community]

it's just -cko2 and -swsusp2 - all the performance patches come from -ck tho

Does -cko2 have fbsplash? If so I'll probably switch to yours cause mine has been giving me problems lately, since about 2 nvidia versions ago

it does have fbsplash

Aye, ck is awesome.
As normal, updatedb runs at midnight and updates the slocate database. On stock kernel, if I am playing a game, it becomes immediately unplayable, with massive frame skip. On CK, absolutely minimum frame skip and a higher frames per second then on stock.
On stock kernels, if i restart X or switch out of X, mpd skips, ck doesnt.
CK really does improve responsiveness and interactivity, as it was designed to.
Heh, i've been promoting CK for a while.... but nobody believed me...

Does ck patchset have fbsplash?
Cause this is my problem.
I need to use 2.6.13rc* b/c that fixes my sound issue
when going to fbsplash homepage I see a patch for 2.6.13 and then I whole bunch of other one with strange names
and I think the ck patch is only for 2.6.12 right now :-/

Don't feel bad. He didn't notice me without an avatar either.

Oh, I think its the cko patchset that has fbsplash, and not ck, but I may be wrong.
I just switched to dibble's package. It is indeed more responsive. Now if I could only figure out how to get the gensplash image on all six consoles instead of just the first.

I think there's a bootsplash to fbsplash converter somewhere around, you can use that and try some of these:
convert ArchPool, it's awesome.

I found some on dibble's page.
Now then, my VC 2-6 have gensplash images now, but the text (login prompt and issue) are not displayed. Seems like /etc/rc.d/gensplash is overwriting the login terminals.
Second, I'm having trouble with silent mode (is it true I have to patch the initscripts?) But I don't really want silent mode anyway, I don't think. I like to see stuff scrolling by. I also like to know stuff is working though soooo.... when I boot into silent mode it prints an error about software suspend and having to add a resume2= line. WTF is that about?

Forgive my powerposting. Its on account of I have to reboot every time I try something. What I've actually got is that VC 2-6 do NOT have gensplash images on bootup, but if I run /etc/rc.d/gensplash restart, they show up, but overwrite the prompts. Oh, yeah: gensplash is in the Daemons array. Maybe I need to run it from /etc/rc.local...
Any ideas?

if I understand what you saying you need to add a default console font in rc.conf
so edit rc.conf so it has
CONSOLEFONT=default8x16.psfu.gz

That makes me sad. I doubt that giving myself an avartar would have that same effect on people. I do read the forum a lot, I just don't post.

-ck doesn't have fbsplash -cko does. it's the reason for -cko's existence - it's the ck performance patches with a load of extra patches for whizzy stuff
