Clpc, I appreciate the quick response. However, I wonder if there's a problem with the files on the matsusoft.com.ar repo since the error is there too.
There's an error http://matsusoft.com.ar/repository/archlinux/mate/i686/ i686 repo contains two 64-bit packages:
mate-bluetooth-0.0.0-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
mate-character-map-0.0.0-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

You're right about the 64 bit files in the i686 repo, well spotted.... I'll email perberos about that.
I have just finished uploading both the 64 and 32 bit repos.
I have got to get some sleep now... but will solve the 32 bit repo problems tomorrow.

install glib2-git - not error libtool: link: cannot find the library `/usr/lib/libgio-2.0.la' or unhandled argument `/usr/lib/libgio-2.0.la'
because the git version contains libgio-2.0 and the compilation went smoothly.install glib2-git
install mate-utils - fine
not error libgio-2.0
Just installed glib2-git but I'm still getting libgio-2.0 errors...also, my system hangs at boot with it installed. Will there be PKGBUILDs in AUR for mate-system-tools and mate-system-monitor?

There is no system but GNU and Linux is one of its kernels.

fe de errata
sorry about .la, you need to back to glib2 (official package) and build each mate package, or use the last release >= 2011.9 from a repo.
archlinux don't use libtool, and compiler must have --disable-static and PKGBUILD must have !libtool
file permision and wrong 32bits package was fixed. Expect for the mate-bluetooh, I must rebuild it.
mate-menu-editor fixed on git

Maybe he meant something like https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=44691 - a dropbox plugin for the file manager.

Maybe. Just wanted to double-check.

If I'm not mistaken Mate uses Nautilus from GNOME2, so you'll need https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=49163
If you can't sit by a cozy fire with your code in hand enjoying its simplicity and clarity, it needs more work. --Carlos Torres

Speaking of file managers, does anyone else agree it would be awesome if Caja was based on Nautilus Elementary instead of regular Nautilus?

Im not quite sure what i want to think about MATE.
If i correctly understand, people dislike GNOME-Shell, not GTK3 or something else.
GNOME-Panel does still exist in GNOME 3.x
why not improve the GNOME-Panel in GNOME 3 to give it all the GNOME2 functions back or is there something additional that people hate in GNOME3 excluding GNOME-Shell?

This also depends on what the gnome devs want. They might not be too happy with people trying to make gnome3 fallback into gnome2 (pure speculation, I haven't asked them myself).
Porting it to GTK3 will probably have to be faced sooner or later though.

Yeah but GNOME devs dont want mate too, so the GNOME devs are no argoument.
i think, just to use GNOME 3 without shell and extend the GNOME-Panel in GNOME 3 and call it "Mate" would be easier than try to maintain GNOME2

Oh, I thought you meant to port the changes upstream to the gnome devs.
I suppose there's some merit in that the panel from gnome2 already has everything they need, so trying to implement that for gnome3 would be a waste of time and effort since the other environment already had everything they needed. Maybe it'd be easier to just port gnome-panel from gnome2 to GTK3 when GTK2 is deprecated, rather than trying to hack the new panel to behave like the old one, since the new panel is rewritten from scratch (IIRC)?
Or heck, just use this until GTK2 is deprecated and start hacking on the new panel then.
I mean, why throw away something that already works?

I completely agree. Gnome 3 is an awful mess and fallback mode is absolutely no substitute for the Gnome 2 experience. I think Perberos has chosen a good starting point, building up from the last REAL version of Gnome that hasn't been stripped of everything that makes it usable.

I'm just wondering, could there be any benefits to consolidating the Mate, Xfce and LXDE projects into one desktop environment, whether it maintained a separate branch of GTK+ or not?

That reminds me of the Canterbury distro LOL

Have people seen that the Linux Mint developers are now working with the Mate project to try to make Gnome 2 and Gnome 3 compatible. This seems like this a great move to have more people working on Mate. It must be hard for Perberos to do it on his own.
Linux Mint 12 “Lisa” will be released in November this year with continued support for Gnome 2 but also with the introduction of Gnome 3. The radical changes introduced by the Gnome project split the community. At the time of releasing Linux Mint 11 we decided it was too early to adopt Gnome 3. This time around, the decision isn’t as simple. Gnome 3.2 is more mature and we can see the potential of this new desktop and use it to implement something that can look and behave better than anything based on Gnome 2. Of course, we’re starting from scratch and this process will take time and span across multiple releases. Until then, it’s important we continue to support the traditional Gnome 2 desktop. We’re likely to release two separate editions, one for Gnome 2.32 and one for Gnome 3.2. We’re also working in cooperation with the MATE project (which is a fork of Gnome 2) at the moment to see if we can make both desktops compatible in an effort to let you run both Gnome 2 (or MATE) and Gnome 3 on the same system, either in Linux Mint 12, or for the future.

^ yes
I added mate-system-monitor, mate-media and mate-utils on AUR.
mate-media need pulseaudio to show the icon on the notification tray. but it can be disabled at compile (--disable-pulseaudio).
By the way... system-tools-backends disappear from arch repo!
I hope update both repo (i686, x86_64) on ten days.
